Too much weight?

Just curious how much weight everyone has gained thus far b/c just came from my OBGYN appointment and was mortified to hear once again that I'm way too heavy! Before pregnancy I was 135 and now I'm 160 at 5'0 but have been eating well and exercising every day. Honestly I was shocked to hear his reaction since I was at 157 last appointment a few weeks ago. I'm convinced he's still trying to sell me on having an elective C-section but just wanted to see if anyone else was having the same experience??

I've gained 43 lbs so far. My OB wanted me to gain 15-20 only, so every appt I get worried, but she says as long as it's healthy weight and not over eating or lazy weight it's fine. Mine is all baby & swelling so she says it's all uncontrollable. Don't worry! Just keep making healthy choices!

  • I agree with WCIBN.  I started at 140 and 5'3".  On Friday I was at 176 and my doctor didn't say anything about my weight gain.  If baby is healthy and you are healthy (which it sounds like both are the case), then there shouldn't be any cause for concern.
  • Thanks for your feedback! Everyone tells me I look great, honestly I feel GREAT especially considering I'm 30 weeks today (no diabetes, normal blood pressure) and more importantly baby's doing great (heartbeat is strong and he's kicking regularly) so I'm not going to let the scale (or the doctor for that matter) affect the remainder of my pregnancy. Not sure what his motives are and after spending some time on these boards I'm learning that it's not a good enough reason to have a c-section based on 1. weight gain and 2. my vagina "not going to be the same afterwards".
  • You've only gained 25lbs? That sounds perfect! I don't know why he would try to push c-section on you! Keep up the great work making healthy choices and do what feels best for you and your baby! I'm 5'3 at 33 weeks 3 days and I've gained 36lbs with healthy diet and lots of exercise.
  • Gaining 25 lbs at 30 weeks sounds fine to me. Especially since everything else sounds normal. At my 33 week appt I was up 36 lbs. I wouldn't let weight gain be a reason for a c section either.

  • I am 5'4" and started my pregnancy at 155 and my OB told me I was a little overweight. Now at 35w 5d I am 183. I have asked my OB about weight gain and he said it is nothing to worry about and as long as I am gaining it at a healthy rate it is ok. And has never said anything about it unless I bring it up. He also said that I have a lot of amniotic fluid as well which is also due to some extra weight. If you aren't about to pop I'd try to find a different OB because that response is flat out disrespectful. As pregnant women we have enough stress going to your OB for help and information should not be a place for anxiety and worry.
Also with C-sections educate yourself as much as you can. My OB said he would only do a C-sec if the baby was too big for the canal or it was due to health reasons. This guys sounds like a quack and next appt you have I'd would bring someone with you and maybe even put him in place for treating you that way. I know that if my husband and I didn't like our OB (which we love him) we would never go back.
I wish you the best and keep your head up and be the proud and confident pregnant women you know you are!
  • I was stressing about weight gain early on -- I mentioned the 25-35 pound range that everyone uses and my midwife said, who told you that? Her point was that every body and every pregnancy is different. The only thing she said she would be really concerned about was a large gain between two appointments or no gain at all between early appointments, etc. They have never even mentioned my weight to me though I have brought it up with them several times. And every time they say you are healthy, you aer eating well, exercising, etc., baby is healthy -- so its all good. I think this is a much healthier approach. The funny thing is I have not even been doing the 300 extra calories or whatever it is but have still been gaining steadily this whole time. So obviously my body is just doing what it needs to do. Dealing with our bodies changing this much is difficult enough wihtout some jerk making us feel bad about it. You keep on doing what you are doing, stay healhty, and feel good about yourself. Best of luck!

  • Wow! I gained the exact same amount(well maybe a little more at the end) and am the same height as you. There is no reason for an elective c-section. The only time my midwife was concerned was when I gained 9lbs in a week(despite eating healthy, walking several times a week and moving into a new home). I had to watch my bp in case of pre-E. So just watch your blood pressure and you should be ok.

  • My mother gained 70lbs with me, and she was always a skinny woman (still is actually). I started at 200, but fought to keep the same most of my pregnancy. Meaning I would go for walks and try to loose any weight as I was gaining it. Luckily, I'm only at an additional 35lbs. But like I said, I started this off a bit on the heavy end.

So long as it is healthy weight being gained, there should be no reason to worry about it. Different women gain weight differently for each different pregnancy.

  • Your OB sounds rude. 25 pounds at 30 weeks? I would be totally out celebrating if I were in the same situation. It sounds like you are being healthy for sure. My OBs don't pay attention to weight unless you are gaining an excessive amount or aren't gaining barely anything.

  • You've gained 25 lbs and have 10 weeks left to go, so you're on track to gain a total of 35 lbs, which is within the recommended range. What's your OB's problem exactly? Does he have a reason to disagree with his professional association's recommendations or think they don't apply in your case?

Also, bare in mind that you may not have actually gained 3 lbs between the last few appts - you weigh more in the afternoon, after lunch, if you haven't relieved yourself lately, and in the Dr's office, what you wear also factors in; so if your last appt was at 9am but your most recent one was at 3pm, then that alone could add 2lbs that you haven't actually gained in any meaningful way. You can more accurately trace your weight gain at home by weighing first thing in the morning after the bathroom, not wearing anything - once a week, same day each week.

  • I started at 132 and was 157 at my 27 week appointment. My dr. Says it's perfect. I'm 5'8" but I don't think it matters in terms of amount gained. FWIW, I've gained as much as 65 with a pg, and as low as 25. Doctor never freaked out or said anything except like another pp said when gain was 8 lb between visits. It's definitely more comfortable to gain less but baby will be fine. Oh, and the 65 lb gain was my smallest baby :) too much ice cream that time!

  • I started at 170 and was 204 when DD was born. My OB never mentioned my weight once. We did almost end up with a c-section, but that had nothing to do with my weight. (We had possible pre-e, borderline IUGR and then she got stuck during delivery, also things that had nothing to do with my weight.). Your weight gain sounds perfectly normal.

  • I am 5'4 and I started at 124. I am now 167. It is definitely over what is suggested and my little pregnancy app flashes red at me when I enter my weight lol. Honestly, it isn't a big deal. Just make sure you are providing your LO with the nutrients s/he needs to be healthy and you are perfectly fine. Weight fluctuates for the rest of your life, the most important thing is making sure you are setting that little baby up for a healthy start in this world! :)

  • maybe it is because you were slightly overweight before getting pregnant? Think if you are overweight you aren't supposed to gain the normal 25-35 but its supposed to be somewhat less. Either way unless it is affecting the health of your child its nothing to worry about and not sure how that would be a good reason to have an elective c-section...even so you can always say no!

Could be but he told me 3lbs per month would be fine when I was already a few months in so by my calculations I'm kind of on track but I guess not...so confused! :(

  • @aggiecyd definitely not the first to suggest that...

I'm only 26 weeks and have already gained almost 25 lbs. I feel terrible about it but my dr hasn't said anything. I gained 10lbs during 1st tri b/c I was constantly hungry and using pregnancy as an excuse to eat more when I didn't really need any extra calories at that point...now I'm really wishing I hadn't! Live and learn...hopefully I'll do better with my next pregnancy. :(

  • Another thing I'd like to mention is that the amount of weight you have gained doesn't really determine if the baby is large or not and even when they try to measure the baby it's all just estimates and can be way off. C-section is major surgery with risks to you and the baby. If your weight gain is the only concern (which again, I don't see why it is) IMHO I'd try to birth vaginally and at that point if there is an issue, then a c-section could be done.
  • Your OBGYN is a jerk. I love mine. I was self-conscious about my weight to start with (210). I've only gained 8lbs at 32 weeks and I have been soooo worried that I wasnt gaining enough. I mean I ate whenever I was hungry, never deprived myself to keep the weight down.  My OB said it's okay to be outside of the normal weight-gain range (whether it be more or less) as long as your baby is growing properly.

He should be more worried with how your baby is growing and progressing than how big your bump is getting!

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! :)
  • @TrishNicole1219‌ thanks! Wow only 8lbs, that's amazing!! :)
  • Your weight gain sounds perfectly normal to me. I started out at 152 at 5'5" and I'm now at 167 for a total of 15 lbs since my 8 week appointment, but I know I started gaining weight sooner than that! My usual weight is somewhere around 140 so I was already a bit over at the beginning of the pregnancy.

  • Thanks all...yeah the more people I talk to about it, the more I'm starting to realize that perhaps (and I hate to say it) obgyn is focusing on weight b/c he's trying to convince me to do c-section for HIS convenience and benefit (doesn't have to be on call and prob makes more money for surgery w/ins co) argh!!
  • I am 5"2' started at 184 and am now 198 as of yesterday. So ice gained 14lbs from then until 35wks. I've been worried about not enough weight gain, but I eat healthy, tons, etc. I even eat unhealthy foods! But I have prenatal aquatic swimming 2x a week and actually try and do the workout in there.

  • @missyrissy‌ haven't found a prenatal aquatic class in my area but definitely have been trying to take advantage of our community pool now that it's open for the summer! :D
  • @jashikcrib  You're welcome! Actually was at the ob/gyn this morning and we're up to 9lbs lol :) but baby is measuring right so no problem at all. Hope you're doing well today!
