Updated - Your baby's DC day?

What does your baby do all day at daycare? Do they move them from equipment to floor? Vary activities? Hold and interact with them?

M's normal teacher keeps getting pulled for field trips and random people are working the infant room while she's gone (they work there, of course, I've just not met them). I pull up the camera in his room maybe once a day normally, but today there's a sub, so I pulled it up a couple times and noticed he was in the same bouncer each time. I've been checking it all afternoon and he hasn't been moved over the last 4-5 hours except for a diaper change and a bottle that I've seen. I know he's awake because I can see feet kicking/ arms waving.

I'm getting annoyed, but I don't know if I should be. My mom thinks it's pretty normal for daycare infants to spend most of the day in a crib or a bouncer. At least the daycare she had experience with 30 years ago were that way. That's not the norm with the regular teacher and I just can't imagine he's been happy sitting there all day since he wouldn't be at home. In fact, we specifically asked for bouncer/swing time limited and more floor time due to plagio and PT.

What say the board?

Update: The sub was gone by time I got there and the owner was in there with him. I asked how his day was and she said "great!". I mentioned that I was afraid he'd been fussy since it looked like maybe he was in the bouncer a lot and she seemed surprised and asked when. When I replied "oh, between like 11 and 4" she didn't respond right away, but then threw out that he's really content in the bouncer and it's his "comfort place". I reminder her again that we want to limit time in bouncers and swings to an hour a day whenever possible. His regular teacher is sick and won't be back until at least Wed., so I'll be keeping an eye on it tomorrow.

Re: Updated - Your baby's DC day?

  • I was an infant teacher for awhile. We switched it up for the babies and rarely had them in bouncers. The only time we put them in bouncers is when they were fussing and we were already feeding one. Otherwise we were on the floor playing with them. We had tunnels they crawled through and mirrors. We worked on tummy time and sitting up.

It doesn't hurt to talk to them. I personally would.

  • We don't use child care but I would say something if I were you. Maybe they didn't tell the sub that he has a medical issue and cannot be in the bouncer that long.
I don't see why they'd keep him in it all day either though. I feel like that's laziness on their end.

  • I'd do two things. Assuming your daycare operates like mine, there are 4 teachers per room. I would mention to one of the other regular teachers that you popped into the video feed and he seemed to be in his bouncer a lot. Is everything ok? Was he having a fussy day? Do not approach it in an accusatory manner.

Then when the lead teacher returns, I'd mention the sub and say there seemed to be an inordinate amount of time for LO spent in the bouncer. Given your medical concerns, you'd appreciate the subs being briefed on that or a note made somewhere so he is moved with the frequency he is supposed to. Really though, regardless of medical concerns, I'd be annoyed if he was in the same thing all day long.

  • @sugarland726‌ there's actually only one woman in there and just 3 babies. It's a new facility. There will be more babies/adults starting next month I think.

Gotcha. Then take the questions from my first paragraph and pose them directly to this woman. Then I'd mention his medical stuff to her as follow up so that she won't keep him like that tomorrow and in the future.

  • Thanks ladies. The owner came in not long after I posted and relieved the other women. He has since spent time on the floor, in the exersaucer, etc.

I will mention it in a friendly way when I pick him up in a few minutes. Hopefully it doesn't continue.

  • My daycare doesnt have a video feed but I do pop in from time to time since I work close by. . Also I pick him up at various times because I never know when ill get cut from work. Ds is usually being held by somebody or on the floor on a playmat with somebody. . Occasionally hell be in a bouncy chair...but hes never just off somewhere by himself which I do appreciate. If I noticed he was in a chair or same place every time I popped in id definitely voice my concerns about it.
  • I'm glad you talked to the owner about it and hopefully it is better today.  I know that my LO is moved around every 30-45 mins or so between floor, bouncy seat, swing, exersucer, bumbo seat, and arms.  More if being fussy and less if seems extra content.  Babies need to be stimulated.
