3rd Trimester

Cord blood banking

Is anyone planning to do this?? I work for a hospital, and had a Dr. acquaintance ask me if we were planning to do this (as he did for both of his children). We could probably swing the cost, but it would be a BIG investment. There is no question that we would make the sacrifice to invest in our child's future health. However, after some research I have noticed that there many of the conditions that the stem cells would treat are genetic, thereby leaving the child's own cord blood useless. The investment would be from one healthy child to the afflicted child.

I would like to be persuaded, if there is another side of the coin.

Re: Cord blood banking

  • Donation is the way to go.

  • It's a scam.
I feel letting the baby get all of their blood back is the way to go. Delayed cord clamping FTW.
  • They just don't cut until they cord stops pulsing and has had time to filter back to baby I believe
  • Not to hijack the thread, but I've always been curious and never done much reading on it. How long do they delay the clamping? Do they still allow the birth partner to cut the cord afterwards?

  • I too am doing delayed cord clamping. Many babies become anemic within their first few months and this is dramatically reduced by delayed cord clamping. I just asked my midwives and they said it can keep going for up to an hour. Essentially, my placenta will be in a bowl next to the bed while I am bonding with baby until it is done pulsing. When that is finished, then hubs is stil more than welcome to get the honors of cutting the cord. Immediate cord clamping became common practice because it was believed it reduced hemorrhaging in the mother -- but that has since proven false. And the benefits to baby of receiving this blood NOW (rather than in some hypothetical situation that we don't know whether it will or won't pan out) are huge. It would be great if you could do delayed cord clamping and still donate but there just isn't anything left at that point to donate.

  • Supposedly, you can do delayed clamping and donate. We decided not to bank because the chance a LO will need/be able to use their own is minimal; however, we really wanted to bank and be able to help someone else. Unfortunately, due to a medication I was on for years, I cannot donate :(

  • I am going the donation route. It will be much more likely to save a life. Plus, I like the idea of know a strong bank is around if we were ever to need it and donations are what makes that possible.
