Mastitis ?

Sorry if already posted, did not see this. I got mastitis over the weekend, literally felt like I might be dying. It was awful, I called my dr and got the prescription and I am finally feeling a little better (body chills, fever, aches, horrible headache) but my breast is still sore and has a lump. I am wondering when this lump will end up draining out and what did you ladies do to get the blocked duct to drain. I am massaging tryin to apply heat when I can... Which has not been much but I am going to do it more. Thank you for reading.

Re: Mastitis ?

  • Nursing AND pumping as much as possible! Also, when they are feeding or you're pumping use your knuckles to "push out" the lump TOWARD the nipple. Hurts like hell, but it helps to push that milk out of the blocked duct and keeps it from spreading to your lymph nodes! (That is beyond painful...) Also, when you are in the shower, do as much as you can to drain both boobs! The heat helps and so does soap - the suds help reduce friction when you're pushing through the lumps. Bonus that you don't have to worry ab where your milk sprays or choking your baby from pushing out too much milk while they're eating! Just make sure to keep pumping/draining the other breast too or you'll be miserable when they're both backed up! Good luck!!!

  • The lump should go away. Did your doc schedule a follow up appointment with you to make sure that everything is healing? My doc did when I had it because she said that sometimes the lump doesn't go away and that's a problem. Glad that you're feeling better...take probiotics or eat extra yogurt to make sure that you don't get a yeast infection or that baby doesn't develop thrush. And keep nursing on that side too...it won't hurt baby.
  • You cld also use a vibrator to break up the clog. Anything with vibrations, toothbrush, hand held massager, sex toy. It works!

  • So sorry for you! I am currently dealing with mastitis so I feel your pain! :( I have a handheld massager that works wonders. I use that and heat and it seems to work.
