purée textures..

now that our LO are getting older, have you changed the textures of the purées you feed.. I know some of the squeeze food, like happy baby, has a great texture. Usually I make my own, but I'm not sure how chunky I should be making it. I dont know if this even makes sense....

Re: purée textures..

  • It's probably all in your comfort level. I've always mixed a little oatmeal to make it a thicker consistency. The Beech Nut "just" whatever purées have pieces of food, specifically the peas. Have you noticed dd chewing anything? I give dd what we are eating and she chews so I would assume it's a natural progression. Hope that helps some.

  • I've always made mine thicker than the stuff you buy at store. Just use less liquid to blend it.

  • Yep we are in chunkier pureés now as well as chunks of food.

  • I have also always made them a bit thicker and chunkier. For example the chicken I make for her is sort of like chicken salad and I do give her scrambled eggs and she chews everything LOL. Sometimes when I see babies out at restaurants I notice the parents giving them some like bread or some of their fries and I would be a little nervous to do that with LO..

Should I be keeping some chunks in the purée?? I just would imagine she would get confused with the purée and chunks combined...I am most likely over thinking it

    Thanks ladies!

  • I usually do the stage 2 purees, but I've given her very small pieces of thicker foods from our plates before, like mashed squash, so the other day I tried a stage 3 puree which is pretty thick and has small chunks in it. Lizzy gagged and threw up everything she'd just eaten plus a lot of her previous bottle. The same thing happened last week when I tried cottage cheese. Sooo,, I guess we're not quite ready for that yet. I'll give it another few weeks.

  • @ballygirl that's what I'm afraid of! Secret chunks of food in purée...

  • Do what you are comfortable with. If all you've given is purées, your dd may have a harder time. I give bites of anything we eat -at a restaurant on Sunday, I had the waitress bring white rice and bread because the fries had some sort of batter than made them too crispy.

  • How about adding a little cooked pastina or rice to the thinner purée to give a little texture?

  • LO hates the chunks of stuff in the Stage 3 purees, bu he loves eating real food off of our plates.  He has Stage 2 purees as well as "table" food.  Feeding babies is a try it and see process.

  • DD has really surprised me by how well she chews her food, especially since she doesn't have any teeth.  If something is too big, she actually spits it out.  Why don't you try something a little chunkier when you are at home and see how she does?  I tried cheerios yesterday and was shocked at she ate them without a problem.

DD prefers food that she can chew as opposed to the purees now so that's what we've been doing.

  • I think I will! @deedee1017‌ she always chews when she watches us eat without eating anything so I'm sure she's a natural ;) hehe

We get the death stare from dd if we don't share. She's like a dog watching the food from the plate to our mouths. She spits stuff out if it's too big, also. She does try to swallow things a little too soon sometimes, but she has learned to bring it back to chew it more.

@carawasa‌ - I know it's a new process and can be scary. Just follow your dd's cues and let her try new things as you're comfortable. She's eventually going to have to chew food to eat. My dd still doesn't have teeth, but she eats pieces of chicken, turkey, meat in spaghetti, etc. without problems.

Thanks!  I make purees but Im not into pureeing the meat so Ive always done long big strips, he can nibble off pieces with his front teeth but for the most past gums it until it shreds in mouth.
