Too early to talk birthdays?

My LO is one of the older babies on the board and I am starting to think about her 1st birthday. She is our first baby and we have zero experience throwing a party for children or a party that is superficially for children but really for adults.

Is anyone else getting their ideas together? Do any 2nd+ time moms or party planning naturals have any fun ideas they want to share?

  • DS was born 9/24 so we are most definitely already planning. Pinterest is amazing for sure! We are doing a mustache theme with all kinds of fun decor. Lots of balloons and goodies for the kids and adults to take home. Bigdotofhappiness.com has some party packages too and they have all kinds of themes and colors.
  • I'm planning to just do a Halloween party since DS was born 10/22. I have found adults like to dress up, so I figured that would make it fun. I won't force him to have Halloween parties when he's older, but I figured for his first birthday he won't care.

Not helpful for an early Oct/late sept baby I suppose.

  • We have the date picked out since we are using my parents house. I had a theme and ideas all picked out, but DH nixed it and said it would be better for a 3rd or 4th birthday when DS can remember it. So... a theme is still up in the air.

@tyrannosaurusbeck - I'm totally stealing that photo booth idea!

DS was born 9/7 - one of the earlier ones on the board. I keep going back and forth between a fall theme and a monkey theme, but I think we're going to do the monkey theme. I do not have the time to do all the #pintastic things, so we'll probably keep it low key. I'm thinking we'll just have a bbq, bonfire, cake, etc.

I'm thinking I'll save the pumpkin / fall birthday for next year when he has some friends and can decorate pumpkins, enjoy a caramel apple, play some games, etc.

  • I have a 8/3 baby so I'm definitely planning. However, all I know of right now is the date. We get back from vacation the day before her actual birthday (which is on a Sunday), but I'm going to wait and have the party the weekend after.

I'm sure it'll be hot, so I'm thinking I'll do something with her pool and maybe a sprinkler or something for the bigger kids. Pinterest is also my friend.
  • I don't think it's too early to talk birthdays.  I'm hoping the weather will be nice enough to have a barbecue.  DD loves other kids so I think she will be happy just to have kids around.  I plan on having some kind of a craft table somewhere (for kids to do a craft) and then some random outside fun activities like bubbles, jump ropes, maybe bean bag toss and lots of balloons. Oh, and of course a pinata.

Do you have any themes in mind?

  • Am I the only one not excited about throwing a 1st birthday party?

I know it's expected, but I don't want to do it.  My mom hates my step-mom, my step-dad won't come if my dad is there, and my MIL will hog LO the entire time (plus I don't like her).  I'm sure DH will want to invite some of his friends, plus his 4 siblings will be there (and a spouse).  So many people.

  • I have a theme and a place picked out back in my hometown.  We will do his first few birthday parties there because all of our family is there.  When he is school aged and has friends to invite, we will do our parties here.

Pinterest is my go-to for planning parties now.  My mom LOVES planning, decorating, etc. so I am letting her do a lot of it. My little brother just had his 5th birthday and it was a Cowboy theme, complete with a photo area with saddles, hay bales, and a jail and cowboy and cowgirl (where you insert your face).  She also made 30 + old timey stick ponies for the kids to take home.

I'm leaning towards little man/moustache theme but since D is a 10/26 baby I might do Halloween because I love these bat invites. Damn Pinterest

I'm totally stalking your pinterest now because we are doing the mustache theme too!

I was thinking of Rainbow Polka Dots and just drenching everything in sprinkles

I understand not wanting to deal with the 'by obligation only' invites. I am wanting to hold the party somewhere other than my home so I don't have to deal with a lingering relative.

  • For DS we had a huge party. It just snowballed out of control and before I knew it we had a 40 person party. I don't know what we are going to do for dd- we have way more friends with kids now and most of them have not only one but 2 kids:/ for DS's first we didn't even try to pretend it was for him. The theme was cookies and beer and the invites said something like "we all made it! Yay!"

I am going to TRY and avoid having too big of a blow out with all the obligatory invites by bringing a birthday cake to the pumpkin farm when DH's family goes in October.  They have picnic tables and everyone packs lunch for their family.  I don't want gifts or anything, so just to do the cake and sing happy birthday works for me.

I think having it somewhere else is a good idea.  I'm going to see if the neighborhood clubhouse is available to use.  The weather is too unpredictable that time of year to commit to something outdoors, but it's an option as well.

You can do so much with this!  I don't know what age group kids you would have at your party, but our babies won't be interested in playing games yet.  If you have other kids going maybe you can do some sand art.  Try orientaltrading.com.  They have lots of fun inexpensive stuff for parties.  You can have a dress up box where kids can put on different kinds of accessories and then snap pictures.  maybe have an adult manning that "station" and taking pictures.

  • I'm planning on doing a nursery rhyme and music themed party....I think.

I run an early childhood music program and have done programs for countless first birthdays. LO comes to all of my classes with me and loves music. I think it's only fitting that after seeing so many other little ones enjoy my birthday parties, I should see my own daughter enjoy it too.

    Must now go start pinning.

We are doing a monster theme and holding it in our new garage. Family and a few friends... We will BBQ and have a bonfire. Low key but hopefully fun for all the little cousins.

  • I've been pinning for awhile. I have a couple of themes in mind but I am thinking of going with a sports theme, more so, baseball. We will also incorporate a Fall theme so there will be apple cider, donuts, etc. I'm thinking of decorating pumpkins like baseballs. He is a 10/26 baby so very close to Halloween & right in the middle of fall. :) I love Pinterest!!

  • I have been looking at themes, but no decision made yet. DH has a week of vacation from work that week, so we booked a condo in FL. I will probably go with that and do some type of beachy theme, but it will be pretty low key. Both sets if grandparents are gonna come down and my mom has family in FL so they will be there as well. Can't wait to see what DS thinks of the gulf!

  • Never to early to start! As for the 1st bday we go BIG! For us it really is a celebration that we made it (survived) through the first year and a thank you for all that have helped. For DS we had around 80 adults…. and their kids. I cooked chili, corn bread muffins, salad… for kids mac and cheese bites, star cut cheese sandwiches, fruit salad. This time I will have it catered. Our theme was Rockstar. Kids came dressed as rock stars, we had a craft for them, bounce house…. wine/ beer/ "rock star" adult  drink and I don't mean the energy drink type, HAHA! For DD I am thinking fairy princess theme. I need to get on it- only 3 1/2 month left!! ACK! How did this fly by so fast!
  • I started getting ideas together. She was born 9/28 so we want to do a fallish theme. More like the colors than the objects like pumpkins and leaves. We are going to have a closed in tent in our backyard with lights on the ceiling of it. Have a clothesline with pictures clothes-pinned to it, burlap happy birthday banner, hot cider in mason jars, popcorn in kraft bags. We also want to set up a photo booth type thing and send the pictures to the guests in their Thank You card. I also want to do something with chinese lantern plant

Here's my pin board of some of my ideas.: https://www.pinterest.com/TyrannosaurusB/first-birthday-ideas/
DD was born on same day! BDAY Buddies! Cute ideas!
  • I totally am following some of your pinterest boards as well now. I love planning parties so we are doing one probably at a local park. DH said I can't have more than 30 people if we do it at home. Geez with just family we're at 30 so off to the park for a few hours it is.

I went back and forth on a Halloweeny/fall theme but have now just settled on rainbow colors (maybe in fall tones) with lots of balloons and stuff. The kids can all play on the playgrounds while the adults chit chat and hang out. Eat lunch, cake and viola time to go!

  • I just found out that my MIL is making the trip to be at DS's 1st Birthday party! (This is a happy thing, I love my MIL). It was up in the air because my niece has a birthday a week after DS, and DS's party will likely be on MIL's actual birthday. So now I'm thinking I need to do something better than just a halloween party for his birthday. Loving all the ideas people are having here

  • At the suggestion of a friend, I looked into having a party at the zoo and they do not permit birthday parties for children under age 3 or over age 10. They will not even let us rent the shelter!

  • I can't start DD2's until I finish DD1's- she turned 3 yesterday but her party is on Sunday. I've pinned a lot of stuff for her "Very Hungry Caterpillar" theme.

For DD1 we'll reuse DD2's polka-dot and cupcake theme, but since I have pinterest this year I will look and see if there are any cute polka-dot Pinterest crafts. I'm not going too crazy for DD2 but I still want it to be cute and fun (and cheap- it has to be inexpensive lol)

I have thought of doing a very hungry caterpillar party because the menu is already planned!
  • I've definitely been thinking about it and looking on Pinterest but haven't pinned anything yet. Love all of your ideas!! I'm thinking ladybug theme since I call her Layla lovebug and I saw adorable ladybug themed parties on Pinterest. Just not sure how big we are going to make it. I have such a big family and my dh has a very small family . His mom thinks we are crazy for doing anything big but I feel like you only turn one once! I've got some time since lo was born at the end of october.
