Breastfeeding

Anyone else have a breast biopsy while BF? (long)

(I just recently came to the bump and am not sure if I'm expected to post an intro. I know that's the norm on the BMB but not really sure about the others. I can definitely post one if its prefered! )

I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with breastfeeding after a breast biopsy and what your experience was. Im mobile and couldn't find a search feature so I apologize if this has already been discussed. I had one done Thursday morning and since then it's become quite painful - red, swollen etc. I've been in touch with my Dr and got some antibiotics last night. However, I'm thinking I may have to go to the ER (per dr instrictions)this morning since it doesn't seem to be improving.
Its just very frustrating and I can't seem to find a whole lot of info about recovery in breastfeeding moms and was just curious as to others experiences.

  • No experience, but I just wanted to say I hope things start healing and feeling better.

I would check with your doctor or call an IBCLC to see if they have any tips. A coworker's wife had a bad breast infection requiring surgical intervention and she continued to pump that side , but it really depends on your individual case. GL!

  • I had an infection and had to have my breast surgically lanced. I tried to pump it to keep milk production up but ultimately it went dry so I only BF from one side now. Sort of a bummer but at least I'm still EBF! Also the formerly infected boob is tiny compared to the healthy one :|
  • What type of biopsy did you have done? I had a severe abscess and had an ultrasound guided needle aspiration done weekly for 6-8 weeks (I can't remember, this was 2011) while breastfeeding. Milk production remained the same. The milk did continue to fill the abscess which made things a bit more difficult for recuperation and my surgeon would have loved for me to wean, but it all worked out in the end.

Yes!  I had a core biopsy and it got rather red (never warm like infection though).  I didn't feed off of that side because my milk was pink (which apparently isn't an issue, but yuck!), but I pumped it every 2-3 hours.  I had milk coming out of the biopsy site, which the surgeon said was a problem, but my GP said was fine.  I just help pressure to the biopsy site when I pumped and milk eventually stopped coming out as it healed.

A fun little tidbit-  I have no scar at all.  Since BM was somewhat cleaning out the site when I pumped, I healed from the inside out and you can't even see where I had my biopsy.

ETA: I never had any milk or supply issues with that breast.  In fact, it ended up being my big producer.

ETA one more thing: They surgeon told me to wean.  I told him to kick rocks.

  • Thanks for all the support!

The day after the biopsy (Fri) I was able to nurse again (dr said i had to wait 24 hr) which helped a little bit with pressure since DS is much more effective than the pump. But it was not getting any better and I had a sneaking suspision it was getting infected. I called the Dr and was basically made to feel like I was crazy because apparently there was no way I could possibly be getting infected that soon. Right. By Saturday night my whole breast was bright red, firery pain and leaking brown\yellow from the incision. Gross. Of course this was while we were out of town visiting family. So I called the Dr again and basically told her to call in a prescription for antibiotics to the pharmacy. She did so reluctantly and said to go to the ER if it wasnt better by morning. Surprise! I ended up in the ER with *gasp* an infection. Basically I had gotten mastitis. I finally got pain killers and the right antibiotics and FINALLY on the mend. I managed to continue BF through it, however, it felt like it did when we were first learning.

    Again thanks for the support!

So glad you are doing better.  I hope your biopsy results come back great.  Boobs tend to get a lot of benign lumps and bumps when nursing.

I think it was called a punch biopsy? I think they should call it somthing else because punch - kind of intimidating.

That's awesome about the scar ( or lack of) I hadn't even thought of that! Thankfully I don't think my supply has been affected either! :)

I actually got a call from the Dr this morning and it was just a ruptured cyst that got irritated. I expected it to be nothing but since breast cancer runs in the family we figured better safe than sorry!

Glad it turned out to be nothing! I had found a hardened area in my breast (not a clogged duct) and ended up having an ultrasound on it about a month ago. Doc determined it was a cyst also.
