Post Partum Arthritis or Arthritis-like symptoms?

I had a rough pregnancy all around with low iron and high BP among other things.  My fingers were numb for about two months before I had the LO and I am just about back to full feeling now, 5 weeks PP.  A couple of weeks ago I started to experience joint pain, which I thought was part of the recovery as all the fluid I retained was FINALLY leaving.

But, it has gotten progressively worse in last week or so. My hands are so bad I am getting concerned about lifting and holding little Jack.  In the morning and if I haven't moved them in 30 minutes, the pinky and ring fingers lock up. And I am having difficultly getting up stairs or getting out of bed with my ankles and knees.  I am hobbling like an 80 year old.

Has anyone suffered from post partum arthritis or arthritis symptoms? I'm going to go to the doc, but I'm need some tips for relief or help managing in the meantime...this pain is awful :-(

For your hands it is probably either Carpal Tunnel or Tendinitis. Both can be caused by pregnancy and having a newborn only makes it worse. I would definitely talk to your doc though to make sure its not something else.

  • I have had this too, the carpal tunnel esque symptoms in my hands and wrists, and painful knees. It started when I was pg and has not gone away. I read about something called post partum arthralgia, but I dunno if that is what it is.

  • For what it's worth, I used to have this issue before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Once they put me in medication it went away. I know that pregnancy messes with your thyroid levels, so that's a possibility as well.

  • I asked the ob about this near the end of pregnancy and didn't get much info. Just said it would probably go away after delivery (which it hasn't done completely). Can you let us know what your doc says when you bring it up?
  • Also, maybe Motrin could help as a first step for pain relief? (In addition to warm water/compresses, movement)
  • My GP said I had massive swelling and high BP accompanied with the low iron at the end of my pregnancy.  My body is slowly correcting itself and could take up to 3 months to fee better.

I am back on the Celebrex I take for my hip (torn labrum from a car accident) with painkillers for the break through pain.  If it doesn't resolve in another 6-8 weeks I have to go to a rheumatologist to rule out RA or Lupus :-(
