April 2014 Moms

Moms who work from home...

So I'm trying to work from home- I do real estate and it's a challenge to say the least. Feel like I'm ignoring baby when I'm making calls (yeah right) I mean emails that are all from my iphone. But I'm trying to keep on top of things to better our life. Then ok- the flip side I'm trying to enjoy time I'll never get back with her! Between activity mat, her on my lap playing and talking to each other and her time in the swing and or napping, I'm trying to make the most of our time. Anyone else living this craziness? Sometimes between work, my little lady and oh yeah everything house and husband related- note did not add social as I forget what that means- I could burst or rather self combust as I don't have the energy to burst. Please tell me in not alone in struggling to handle this all...

  • Working from home is hard! I'm a real estate appraiser and I feel your pain. It definitely pulls you in two directions.

I'm a writer with deadlines every day and I'm also home with LO. It's HARD.

Today I tried to make an actual phone call. He cried so loud during it (and he rarely cries) that the person couldn't hear me. I cried a little myself out of frustration when I hung up.

Every morning I try to work for an hour before DH leaves the house. Then it's a constant race to complete one thing or another until he gets home. I also feel guilty working anytime LO is awake.

Sometimes I wish I could take a break and just focus on LO for this precious first year, but we need two incomes.
  • I work from home as well but LO won't be staying with me, he will need to go to daycare. I work 12 hour days & there is no way I could concentrate on my job/make calls with him home. It sucks, but that's how it has to be.
  • @EmmaD312‌ I've totally cried out of frustration too. It's the pits because it's no ones fault and it's just enough to get you crazy!

@MrsStanton87‌ I hear ya, we have part time day care set up for August but I'm dreading it. I honestly thought I could do it all and it's going to have to have a time limit to keep both a happy baby and mama.
  • I work from home (personal trainer), but i am not doing anything until the fall and then i will start taking on clients again.

  • My main job I do from home and it has definitely been a challenge. I really thought I was handling it well...or at least appearing to the outside world that I was handling it well until my SIL said something last week along the lines of how much harder she's going to have it when her baby gets here later this year and she has to pump all day. Yep, not challenging at all trying to do the same amount of work while there is a newborn there. *eye roll* I feel your pain!

  • I work from home, and have found that I just have to be hyper-efficient during nap times.

I've also changed my voicemail to instruct people that email is the best way to reach me at this point. I'm self-employed.

  • I work from home but we had to get a full time nanny/sitter.
Today was my first day back at work and every time I heard my baby cry I started crying.
My DD won't take a bottle (despite our efforts!) so I'm nursing her when she needs to eat. My work is so demanding I wouldn't be able to watch her during the day. It pains me to pay someone to be with my baby all day when that's all I want to do. But we need the two incomes :(
I am impressed by all of you that are doing it alone. I can't imagine how hard that must be.
  • I work both as a PT contractor for an online company and do freelance sewing work, so when I have a lot of client projects things an be crazy, especially with two kids who rarely nap at the same time. It's super hard some days, but even on my worst day I prefer it to when I had a FT office job and ds was in daycare.

I think most moms feel pulled in many directions, it's just learning a balance thy fits your family.

  • Yeah I feel very lucky to be able to make it work, even with the challenges. Working full time and pumping at work is also hellahard, and then throw in baby sick days.

  • I used to WFH 100% and a lot of it was providing software training to clients, over the phone and online.  There is no way I could have done that job with LO here now.  It used to be disruptive when my cat would randomly meow for attention.

Starting in a few weeks I will be back WFH one day a week doing technical writing and it should be doable, but only because my job is super, super easy and slow paced (government job) and I never have to use the phone.

Earlier this year I started doing some freelance sewing work and THAT has been a challenge.  Luckily I only have one (large) project at the moment, and the client doesn't need the item until like early fall.  I am able to fit in maybe an hour or two of work a day, in like 20-30 minute bursts.

Yep pumping at work is annoying! I feel like every time I look at my watch it's time to pump again. I WFH 1 or 2 days a week just so that I don't have to bring in all of the crap that goes with pumping + my gym bag + my laptop + my purse. DS is in daycare ft and there's no way that I could be at home working and have to take care of him too. On those days I don't feel rushed to get my hair and makeup done...I can just lounge around in yoga pants all day. Kuddos to you ladies who WFH and keep LO at home too.
  • I do Thirty-one as a side business and thank god I'm able to work it around my family's schedule.  Otherwise, I don't know how you all do it.
