Pain with milk coming in?

I am currently on day 2 after a csection and this morning my breasts have been painful, kinda like when it is too cold and your nipples get hard. I didn't think too much of it until I got soo cold all over and started to shiver, my breasts got even more painful and hot to the touch.

I asked a nurse and she said it is normal and I might even get a temp.

Anyone else dealt with this? Any advise before I consider cutting them off? :)

Re: Pain with milk coming in?

  • I had a c section as well and I was in a great deal of pain those first few days. Both breasts were hard and hot. We tried to nurse and they also had me trying to pump but I was hardly getting anything. It was awful on top of the pain I was already in from the c section.

My nurses told me the opposite of what you're saying, that it was not normal. They kept a close eye on me to make sure it wasn't mastitis.

Once I got home I continued to have a really hard time. Both my breasts and nipples were constantly in pain. I ended up having to EP and I would use heat before pumping and cold compress after. That helped a lot.

I did end up getting mastitis twice so make sure you really pay attention and know the signs.

I seem to be really sensitive because both nursing and pumping were just very hard on me, but a lot of people say it gets better and easier if you just hang in there. I'm still pumping at 6 1/2 months and it's not as painful as it was.

Hang in there, sorry you're having a hard time!

  • Thank you, will keep an eye out for that for sure.
  • A couple of things from your question:
-After my csection I had large temp swings, apparently this is normal and due to hormones.
-When my milk came in my breasts felt really warm to the touch, apparently this is also normal throughout breastfeeding.  They still do and I'm 6 weeks pp.
-When my milk came in it was painful.  I was super engorged, I felt like I had rocks in there.
-The pain went away in a couple of days as my supply regulated, and the temperature swings in a couple of weeks.

I can't speak to your experience, and if it doesn't feel right, you should get checked out, but your symptoms could be normal.

  • After several more pumpings and multiple heat pad sessions it seems to have died down a little. I have been massaging the breasts for the last 5 min of each session to encourage better draining of the breast, that seemed to help.
  • Good! You might consider getting some therapy packs. I had 2 sets of the Lansinoh gel packs, one to heat before pumping and one I kept in the freezer to use after. They made things a lot easier for me. They fit perfectly inside your bra and they can also be snapped around the flange if you want heat while pumping. I don't know if I would have made it past those first couple of months without them.

Keep at it mama, you're doing great!
