I had a 2006 Focus before trading my parents for their volvo wagon when Killian was born and I took it in for an oil change once and barely made it back to my apartment with smoke coming out from the engine. I called them & said, um my car, that y'all just worked on, is smoking in my driveway... They told me to stay away from it, don't touch, don't drive & they sent someone right out. Discovered they had failed to reconnect a hose properly & I'd been burning fluid on my engine the whole way home.
With the Volvo I drive now I'm actually driving an hour away to take it to the same mechanic my parents did when we lived out in the sticks (even more so than I do now!). He laughed when I told him I was driving it and that I wanted to bring it to him but we had work done in town and they missed a bunch of stuff so I'll make the drive for better quality work and a lower bill.
I would not want to go back there either if I was you! That is terrible that that guy smoked in your car, left out parts, and then he is the only one who can fix it. That is pretty bad for a dealership too. I hope things start looking up with your car situation.
Agree that a different dealership is the way to go.
Would also be requesting a rental given how much they messed up until they can figure it out. Do you have a local tv station with a consumer reporter? our guy has a team of people who help him out & gets a lot accomplished for consumers. Sometimes name dropping the reporter (because they don't want bad press).
The other thing is since you've had such bad luck there & the one person who supposedly does these for them already worked on the car & left it in the state that it is, does not give you confidence in their ability to get it done right the second time, especially given that you're driving around with your infant in the car (yes, would use the word infant - they're technically still wearing infant clothes).
Also, have found that emphasizing the child part, that you are concerned not only about the 2nd hand smoke your child had to breathe, that the steering column was not put together correctly and could have been even more dangerous with an infant in the car, that you no longet feel safe in it when driving your baby on errands because it could do that on the freeway or another busy intersection and then what, you'd have to push it off to the side and wait for a tow truck? (which do not take carseats by the way)
Dealerships can really vary when it comes to service. Some see it as a necessary evil and others realize that they can have a customer coming back for life by treating them well. Like, I go to the GMC dealer in town who also has Buick and Cadillac -- Back in the 2000s, they were recognized as one of the top 10 dealerships for GM service. They bend over backwards -- They'll take me to work or back home if it's going to be more than a half hour, offer me a loaner for the day if I need to be out of town, or (if nothing else works out) pick it up/deliver it back to me. DH goes to the other big dealership in town which is an odd combo of Chrysler/ Chevy/ Honda and they could care less whether he comes back in. If you can, I'd try another dealership to see if it's better.
My sister had a Chevy Cobalt and just recently bought a new car because of the recall issues. The car shut off while driving as well so they sent her with a loaner car, thankfully on them, because she had it for weeks and ended up buying her current car before even getting her Cobalt back. They said they were waiting on the part, if there's a recall you think they would have the parts in stock and ready.
I'm sorry you've been going through all this! I'm going through some car issues myself right now and it is definitely not fun!! I hope things get resolved soon.
