"Normalizing" breastfeeding

Kinda sad that society doesn't find it normal already that it needs to be normalIZED, but it seems like there's a real pop culture moment happening, and maybe feeding babies in public (gasp!) won't be such an issue in the future.

I got a good laugh out of this post, so just wanted to share … https://www.buzzfeed.com/southerndisposition/25-historical-images-that-normalize-breastfeeding-jlw6

Re: "Normalizing" breastfeeding

  • I can understand your point. There is a thing on the news now about a mother who bfed her baby at graduation. When I clicked on the CNN video to watch it, and it led to a long list of other videos about breastfeeding in public. I was really surprised! I didn't realize BFing was so newsworthy! That's why I think it isn't "normalized"... at least in some areas. A woman formula feeding her baby at gradation wouldn't be on national news.

  • I live in a liberal area and I see BF talked about a lot but I don't see it practiced.

I hear a lot of "it was hard so I FF".

In some ways I still think BF has a way to go before it is the true norm.

Yep -- I also think it's normal as is and doesn't need to be "normalized," but that's apparently not the case in a lot of places.

I don't think it is normalized because of comments like Wendy William's and her panel's as well as other news stories that are circulating. If it was normalized then nursing in public wouldn't be a topic for discussion. Have you ever seen a picture of a child who was bottle fed making national news? Or a woman kicked out of a restaurant for bottle feeding their child? No. Why? Because being bottle fed has been normalized.

That's exactly what I was trying to say haha. Thanks for putting it so eloquently!
