Acid reflux is rearing its ugly head

The last few nights I haven't been able to sleep well because of reflux.  Last night I actually woke up choking on the acid.  I know the standard: eat small frequent meals, elevate your head during sleep, don't eat right before bed, blah, blah, blah.  I am going to buy a wedge pillow.  Does anyone have one that worked for them?  Did you try anything else that helped with the reflux?  I have an apt later this week so I will ask my Dr. for suggestions then, but suggestions from those with experience would be helpful.  TIA!

Re: Acid reflux is rearing its ugly head

  • I take Pepcid (famotidine) or tums and it really seems to help me out. Both are approved by my OB.

  • Ugh I feel for you mine has been horrible too. I agree with PP you need to ask your doctor what they approve. Mine approved the tums and she was also ok with Zantac. I personally just sleep with a couple of pillows and prop myself up. Also don't eat anything a couple hours before lying down. Easier said than done though I have to eat something before bed every night!

  • I was taking Pepcid daily for the last couple of weeks but at my last appointment Friday, the doctor gave me the ok for Prilosec OTC.

  • I haven't taken anything for reflux, but I have some serious heartburn these days. Ice cream helps me. :P

I'm sorry that you're going through this. I did have reflux during my pregnancy with DS but I cannot remember what I did for it! FX you find a good solution that works well for you ASAP.

  • I use all the things. Chewable Tums. The minty Tums lozenges. I have a prescription for Ranitidine as well that my OB ok'd. Sometimes a glass of milk kills it for me. I use Ovaltine too, for added flavor and vitamins. :)

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I have been eating rums like candy for the last several weeks as the heartburn hit a while ago. I also have been taking zantac, but it hasn't been helping lately. I'm going to try pepcid and see if that works. I ordered a wedge pillow, so we will see!

The Tums did absolutely nothing for me. I would take one every 30 minutes or so. After a few days, I tried the Pepcid and it worked magic and would actually work for about 24 hours or so but it has recently gotten worse so doctor said Prilosec should do the trick this time.

eta: Hope you get some relief quick! Reflux is the worst!

  • Mine just got bad in the last week.  It is awful!  I am taking Pepcid and tums but it never seems to go away :(

I think stress at work has also heightened the problem.  Hoping I get rid of it soon because I feel like throwing up all day again.
