After the MOTN feeding...

I cannot get my LO to go back to sleep. She will fall asleep feeding, I can burp her and rock her for 20 min and she wakes up within 5 min of me setting her down. After 1.5 hours of nurse, burp, rock, lay down, wake I end up putting her in the swing and sleeping the rest of the night on the couch. Part of me wonders if I should reduce the time I allow her to nurse so maybe she is not as full? Anyone else have this issue?

Re: After the MOTN feeding...

  • For the MOTN feeding, unless he smells or is really wet, I don't unswaddle and change. I just feed him while he's still sleepy and I also don't talk to him. Usually he will go back to sleep fairly easy.

  • My LO wakes at around 2-3a....

I feed, burp, change diaper, finish feeding, burp again, reswaddle, rock, and put him in his crib. He usually rustles around for about 20min , but doesn't cry.

We bottlefeed and I have prepped bottles in his room for MOTN feedings. Only a nightlight gives any light. No talking or.eye contact.

When you.say she wakes up, is she crying or just grunting and rustling around?

  • DD has been wakeing up around 3:30-4 to feed and when I put her back to bed she grunts and groans the rest of the night. Super annoying but she isn't actually crying so I leave her (usually for 3-4 more hours)
  • When you figure it out let me know. I can get a good sleep from 10:30 PM until about 2:30 AM in the PNP. Once I move him back to the PNP after I nurse him at 2:30 AM he wakes right back up. This is even after I make sure he is fully asleep. So confused.
  • Our routine is similar to others, diaper change, bf one side unswaddled, burp, re-swaddle, feed the other side, burp and then back down. No talking and we keep the lights off except some
    Night lights.

  • DD was like that. I would DREAD motn's bc she wouldn't go back to sleep for at least an hr. Luckily she started sttn pretty early. For the LO we have a similar routine as everyone else. Minimal talking and light and diaper change before the bottle.

  • I keep it quiet and all of that. She usually starts with a grunt and gets louder and louder until she fusses. It's almost like she need to burp more , but never does. Of course this morning right when I finally fall back asleep the dog goes apeshit barking at something so now I have my first day back at work and been up since 4:30. Just shoot me now.
  • I've found that too much rocking back to sleep keeps my LO up so once she nurses, after a change and swaddle, its pretty much straight to her crib, asleep or awake. She wakes up no matter what if I out her down asleep and she has started falling asleep on her own. There are noises, etc... But I had to learn not to pick her up because I thought she was about to get upset. We do the same during the day most of the time. Most of the time she sleeps on my chest during the day because I love it, but once or twice I will put her in her rnp while sleepy and let her fall asleep on her own. Good luck! The nights where she wouldn't go to sleep were rough. Hoping it changes soon!

  • Like others have said, I keep it dark and quiet. No unswaddling, no diaper change (unless I can tell there's a situation!), and if I notice she's restless, I'll co-sleep with her for a bit. I know this isn't recommended, but sometimes it is the only way anyone in our house is getting sleep. No blankets, no pillows, and I keep her a safe distance from DH.

  • Our MOTN feedings (on most nights) are as follow: 4am LO wakes, gently grumbles to express his need to feed, I nurse him in our bed, help him burp, change his diaper because he always poops as he's falling asleep, strip and redress our bed after he wees everywhere (DH always holds him for this part), put a fresh diaper and clean onesie on him, nurse him again until he falls asleep - at this point the sun is coming up and I can't get back to sleep...

  • LO comes in bed with me after her 5-6am feeding. Guarantees 3 more hours.

  • Is she just awake, laying there?  Or does she cry?  If she's content to just lay there not fussing, then let her lay like that for a few minutes and see if she'll fall asleep on her own.

  • I nurse LO in bed lying down for the MOTN feeding and then she stays in the bed with me and sleeps like a rock. I used to try and put her back in the PNP next to our bed (that's where she starts the night) but she would wake after a few minutes and wouldn't go back down for hours! I didn't want to ever have her in bed with us but it's the only way we all get a good nights sleep! It works so I'm going to keep doing it until she starts sleeping longer stretches and then hopefully she will be in her crib in her her room for the night!

  • Thanks all. Appreciate the feedback. No way I could cosleep, but maybe snuggling a little longer will help.
