Stopping BF or Pumping - I have a soothing tip!

I was not prepared for the pain of quitting EP. For me the pain was worse than the recovery of birth.

If you can - give yourself many weeks to wean yourself off of pumping/bf.

After a very stressful bout of EP and my daughter having food allergies I decide to just stick with the formula.  Since making that decision to quit pumping I got told I am going out of town for work.  I really don't want to travel with my pump by plane so I decided to go from weaning off the pump to going cold turkey.  Holy hell - it was (still is) painful. No one warned me of the pain.

Yesterday I had a co-worker tell me to put Vicks Vapor Rub and cabbage leaves (with veins broke) on my chest.  I left work early and decided to give her methods a shot.  OMG - best decision ever.  I am doing so much better now than I was this time yesterday.  The Vicks and cold cabbage leaves are SO soothing.  I'm now on a routine of taking 3-4 ibuprofen, rub Vicks on my boobs, and then put cold cabbage leaves on top.   I have noticed a very drastic dip in my engorgement and my boobs feel less full.

Anyway - I don't recommend going cold turkey, but if you are crazy like me and go that route I highly suggest having lots of vicks and cabbage leaves on hand.
I noticed a HUGE difference in my pain and fullness sine I started this routine and thought I'd share.

  • Sounds like a good tip for engorged breasts in general. I had a miserable few days a week back from a clogged duct and all I could do was massage, pump/feed and huge hot compresses. Thanks for the tip!

  • @sakura16 the cabbage leaves are good for engorgement, but if you plan to keep breastfeeding/pumping don't use the Vicks - it decreases supply.
  • Oh man I would be nervous about going cold turkey and getting mastitis. Are they any better yet?
    BFP #1 (7/13/12) MC (8/14) 9 weeks. D & C 8/17.
BFP #2 (5/18/13) due 1/26/14. Grow baby grow!
    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • @angiek1‌ thanks for the heads up! I would have been nervous to use the vicks anywhere near where my baby's mouth would be anyway but I didn't realize it decreased supply as well. Just cabbage it is! I also hope you were able to avoid mastitis. That is my worry when trying to dry up so fast.
  • I would never ever go cold turkey. Mastitis is ugly.

I am so intrigued by the cabbage leaves every time I hear about it.
  • Cold turkey sounds like a recipe for disaster. You are lucky you didn't get mastitis as a result.

Taking Sudafed will also dry up your supply. Also, dropping one pumping session every few days, in addition to only pumping for relief as opposed to pumping until empty will help. Hope the rest of your weaning goes more smoothly.

  • I am SUPER lucky I didn't get mastitis. If I didn't have an insane travel schedule coming up I would have stuck to my original plan of taking a month to wean off the pump.  I would never recommend anyone go cold turkey - it is pretty much the worst thing ever. I'm pretty sure going cold turkey dumbest thing I've ever done.

@peanutmuse - I was skeptical of the cabbage leaves, but it works. It is kind of funny walking around with cabbage in my bra.

@Roses87 - I am starting to notice a difference today. While my boobs are still huge, they are softening in spots.

@sugerland726 I might try the Sudafed before I go to bed tonight... thanks for the tip!
  • Rinny85 not going to lie, it was not easy. I'm still full, but the pain has gotten tolerable.
  • Oh thanks for the tip!  I'm looking for advice here now lol
I started today - dropped off DD2 by my mom so she could start her on the bottle for exactly the same reasons you quit BF'ing.  I've been pumping less often, only when I start to feel uncomfortable I pump some out.  I'm hoping that works.  I don't want to go cold turkey.
I'm so glad to find someone else that just started!
How many ounces of formula is your daughter drinking?

  • @wifetomrb101 Holly is drinking 25-30 ounces a day. I am now 1 week and 2 days post stopping and my boobs are totally back to normal. I still leak a bit, but the size and discomfort is gone. I'm back to my original small chested self.

Wow...we have a ways to go then.  Friday was our first day, she took 4 oz, Saturday she took 8, yesterday she took 11.  I think I have to quit giving her the boob period.  I've just been nursing her at night because it's easier...probably should stop that tho. I've noticed my supply dropped like crazy already too.
All her refusal and crying is making me feel selfish...I know it's better for her because she is sensitive to so much but still...I feel like a bad mom :(
ETA: she doesn't mind the formula.  She'll suck it from the syringe as I'm giving it to her, but she will.not.drink from a bottle.  I've tried Medela, Mam, Playtex, and Nuk.  I went out and bought a Tommee Tippee and Avent Naturals this morning.  We're starting with the Tommee Tippee, and I'm really hoping I can return the Avent.

  • wifetomrb101 Don't feel like a bad mom, you've done your best.  I have no suggestion on the bottle, good luck!
