2nd Trimester

Visiting from 1st Trimester- opinions very much appreciated

( Before I start I just want to say that I already called my doctors 24 hour line and was told that what I am describing isn't an emergency and to come in tomorrow. I just wanted to post here and see if anyone experienced anything similar during their first trimester )

I am almost 5 weeks pregnant and have had the normal period like cramps for the first couple of weeks. The normal cramps have subsided but I will get about 2 pretty painful cramps a day lasting a couple of minutes but it is only on my lower left side.  I usually get one at night and it wakes me up but only lasts for a minute or 2. I am worried about an ectopic because I know one sided painful cramps is a symptom. I do not have any other symptoms of an ectopic cramp though. Has anyone else had this happen?

  • I had horrible cramps the first 6-7 weeks, at least. I was so worried my period was coming. I usually just rested as much as I could and tried to drink a lot of water. Some of my friends had the same and a few had no cramping at all..

I agree I had the same thing with my first pregnancy, and everything was fine.

I had lots of cramps up until about 12 weeks, certainly worse in the beginning! Now they've been replaced by lovely RLP. As long as you're not bleeding or in severe pain, I'd think you're okay. You did the right thing by calling your doc and keeping them in the loop!
  • Thank you so much guys!

  • I had sharp pains (round ligament.) As well as some cramps early on. I didn't know I was pregnant until around 7 weeks, so I thought I was awaiting my period. Thankfully, I am just awaiting a baby:D
  • I had an ectopic pregnancy and experienced no symptoms until about 6 weeks. First symptom was bleeding, which led to beta tests and transvaginal ultrasounds. Pain never occurred until 8 weeks. I think I remember reading that ectopic pregnancies aren't usually discovered earlier than 7-8 weeks, so it shouldn't be causing pain.

RLP is the most likely culprit.
  • I agree round ligament pain...

Secondary possibility (and less likely, but it happens to me every pregnancy) the ovary your egg came from may still be a little inflamed or swollen.  I have PCOS and so that's a discomfort that is normal for me.  This is my third baby and I told my husband at about 6 weeks that I could tell this one came from lefty lol.  I get early scans, again fertility issues, and OB confirmed left ovary was inflamed and that's probably where the egg came from...

  • Make sure you stay hydrated.  I know on the days I do better drinking water I feel less of all the uncomfortable aches and twinges we get.  If I slack, I know it.  Which is also a relief for me... If I'm feeling things that are making me worry I just drink some more water.  If they go away, no more worries, if they stick around then it's something I should probably call the Dr. office about.
