Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Need recommendation for Life Jacket for large 1 yr.

My son is turning 1 next week. In early July we are taking a trip to see family at their lake house. We plan to do a lot of boating and beach activities.  I have an infant life jacket that we had for my daughter when she was an infant.  However, I'm wondering if we should bump him up to a child's life jacket rather than an infant life jacket.  He is off the charts for height and just reached 30lbs.  Would you buy him a children's life jacket (these are coast guard approved for children between 30-50lbs) or keep him in the infant one (these ones typically are approved for infants under 30lbs, but have a supporting neck feature)?  Anyone have any recommendations that have taller/larger children?  At the tipping point I don't know whether it's safer to go the size up or stay down.

  • I think the jacket supporting his weight is far more important than neck support.  If he's already 30 pounds, who knows what he'll hit by end of the summer, kwim?

I would go 30-50lbs. My son is almost 13 months and 30 lbs, that's what we got.

  • My son is 27 lbs and some change and 33" tall.  We took him to Target to find a life jacket this past weekend.  The infant one was def too small for him.  We bought him a Speedo Child's M, which i think starts at 30lbs.  When he is sitting in an intertube, the shoulders come up about 1/2", but when he is just floating in the pool, it fits him nicely.  The shoulders didn't come up at all and it kept him upright and his head above water.
