Having breastfeeding problems at 6 months

My LO is 6 months old I have been nursing him since he was born. Nursing was going great! I feel like the past couple weeks it hasn't been going well he eats as long as its fast flowing and when starts to slow down he throws a fit. He also sometimes won't be patient for me to let down. I feel like my milk supply is getting low cause of it. Some feedings I feel full and some feedings I don't. He doesn't comfort nurse either. I also am feeling the pressure from his doctor and certain family members about his weight. He only weighs 13 lbs 6 oz (he only weighed 5 lbs 10 oz when he was born). His last appointment she wanted me to start supplementing twice a day with formula. Which I was sad about cause I know I have the milk for him. She admitted he was happy and healthy but she just wanted him bigger. He is hitting all his milestones and thriving.  He ended up refusing the formula and will have nothing to do with it. I have done some pumping but I feel like I have been confusing my body. Ps. he is eating solids now too. I am very stressed! Any advice?

  • Are you he's not just full and done eating?

  •  Thanks for replying! I have tried breast compression that has seem to help the past couple of days. Normally when he is full he is smiling and acts content. Thats why I have been a little confused to why he was crying sometimes. I guess it could be when I go to feed him he cries cause he isn't hungry. I really try to nurse on demand and pay attention to when he is hungry. I just wish I could put a finger on whats wrong! :-/
  • I just don't understand why one feeding will go great and the next doesn't.
  • He still eats every 2 hours. I guess it's just when he throws a fit I feel like I have no milk for him. But I know that I do. I think sometimes to he doesn't wanna have to work for it. I just think with all the stress of his weight and pressure from people I get worried I am not feeding him enough.  I make his food homemade and he has had avacado, squash and sweet potato. Sometimes I mix in oatmeal (single grain) in his food.

Is he getting bottles at all?  Do you think he's hoping for a bottle that would be a faster flow?
  • If you're worried about weight gain I'd cut out the solids honestly. I'm surprised your pediatrician didn't say that. Those foods are much less calorically dense than breast milk. And that weight isn't too bad, think how much baby has gained since birth, geez they can only catch up so quickly! Mine was 4lb 11oz at birth and at almost 7 months is 15.5 pounds. Pedi is more than happy with that weight even though he's only 8th percentile.

  • Could be teething! Or growth spurt or a developmental milestone. You could always try to find a pedi who is more bf friendly too

  • When are you feeding solids? Has he nursed before solids are offered?

Have you tried switch nursing? Nurse on one side with compressions and breast massage, then switch to the other side as the flow slows, and back and forth to keep up the flow and keep him interested in nursing.

Does he take a bottle? if so, are you doing paced bottle feeding (like this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH4T70OSzGs)?

Thank you so much for the encouragement!! It's good to hear from someone in the same boat! I feel the same way he is happy, healthy and eats as much as he wants.Since his last appointment last tuesday he has put on 6 oz. I am really considering finding a new pedi.
Cause I believe he is doing really well considering he weighed 5 lbs 10 oz.
They had me schedule another appt in a month for a weight check up to see if the supplementing helped him gain more. But I decided not to supplement so she may not be happy with me lol. I don't know how formula could be better then my breast milk. I am new to my area so I don't have a lot people to get advice about good pedi.

PS. I think he was just going through a phase cause he is nursing well again and all is well! I had been going back and forth while nursing him and that really did helped! Thanks Ladies you all have been so helpful!!
