Eczema/allergy/rash

So my LO has a terrible rash on her cheeks, behind her ears, and across the back of her neck. I took her to the doctors office but my pediatrician was on vacation so I only saw the nurse. She said it looks like an allergy to something but not sure what. Could be food (I EBF) or lotion, detergent, anything. Hydrocortisone cream doesn't seem to help but LO doesn't seem to find it itchy. It looks really bad and I feel terrible. The nurse didn't give much guidance on her rash and wanted to see if others have had LOs with allergies. The rash is only on her face so I don't m think its her wash or lotion or detergent. Any help would be appreciated as far as recommendations on where to start, how to help treat this, others with face rashes etc.

Re: Eczema/allergy/rash

  • That is my thought exactly! I've been consulting Dr. Google about eczema and rashes and it looks more like acne than eczema IMO. It's not patchy and crusty but more bumpy like teenager acne. I really hope that's all it is.

  • Hi there! My little girl has this EXACT thing. Our pedi thought either baby acne, eczema, hormones (mine leaving her body she received during pregnancy), or reaction to my breast milk. I was told to cut out nuts and eggs. IMO, it's a hormonal thing because it has JUST started to clear up a bit. It's fading out the same way it came in.
  • @Mtheuer‌ and @jkanter107‌ how old are your LOs? I'm mobile so can't see anything. Mine is 5 weeks now. I assumed baby acne would have cleared for us by now.

She's also 5 weeks and this just recently appeared. Pedi said to keep it moisturized so we bought some Baby Aveeno lotion specifically for eczema. Seems to helping. May also just be running its course.
  • Looks like baby acne but I am no means an expert. DS is just over 5 weeks and has started breaking out. I thought we were in the clear.
  • Ok makes me feel better. Glad I posted this and to get feedback from y'all. Hope our LOs skin clears up soon! I would take acne over an allergy anyday.
  • Looks exactly like my LOs face. I assumed it was acne too. It looks so bad and I feel bad but it doesn't bother her. I haven't been doing anything but hoping it would go away on its own.

  • Everything I've read about baby acne says just to leave it alone. Wash them once a day with mild soap and that's it. I was using hydrocortisone cream thinking it was an allergy but I'm going to just leave it alone now. Poor girl looks like a teenager.
  • If it doesn't bother her, I don't know why use hydrocortisone. I'd stick with aquaphor if you wanted to use something.

My LO has it. I wash her face with aveeno now. And then I put baby powder in my hand and then lightly go over the spots. It's cleared up a lot since I started doing this.

    Edited because typing is hard.

  • I used hydrocortisone cream bc the nurse thought it was an allergy rash and said it would help. I definitely think it's acne. @MeaganStringer‌ I read about baby powder. I may try that! There's so much drama about talcum powder right now. I swear everything causes cancer these days.
  • @mollynicole214‌ I re-read what I wrote and realized it came off as abrasive. My apologies if that was how it came off. Definitely not how I meant it. I'm sorry.

  • Thank you for posting this! LO has the same thing and I just assumed it was baby acne. It's in his face, neck, upper chest and back! It looks awful but doesn't seem to bother him. I just assumed it would go away as well! I've Dr googled and the only rash it resembled in my opinion was baby acne. Fingers crossed it's gone soon!
  • @mollynicole214‌ yea I that's why I pour it into my hand first and then lightly put it in her face. From what I notice, you don't have to really do it every time. It basically just takes the moisture out if the skin and dries it up.

  • @MeaganStringer‌ how often do you apply? 1x a day? More than 1x?
  • @mollynicole214‌ I only do it after her bath. So once every other day.

  • Same here! Hormones leaving the body.

We don't put lotion on it and ride it out.
  • LO had that starting around 4-5 weeks old. We put a little Cerave lotion on it a couple times a day and it got rid of it within a few days.
