Babies: 3 - 6 Months

formula amount

My LOis 3 months old, she is eating about 5 oz of formula a sitting, she is crying when the bottle is gone. I don't mind feeding her more, but do you move up nipple size?
How much formula should she get in one day?? I am new to this she was a breastfed baby only until 2 weeks ago.
thanks

My pediatricians said at 3 -6 months they should be getting anywhere from 24 to 32 ounces of formula per day. Whether you want to do five 6oz bottles Or four 8oz bottles is up to you. My dd is a chunker and eating four 8 oz bottles plus feedings of cereal or baby food in between. As far as the nipple size. If you noticing she is getting tried of sucking before she is full I would move up a size. If you still are unsure call into your pediatrician or ask at the 4 month check :) hope this helps

Oh yeah my LO is 4 months.
  • Move up a nipple size if you think they are getting frustrated with a slower flow otherwise stick with the one you have. It's easy to overfeed with a faster flow. My LO is 4.5 mo old and drinks about five 5 oz bottles a day. Sometimes the morning and bedtime feed is 6 oz. She doesn't drink a lot and is a smallish baby. Offer 6 oz and see if your LO drinks it all and doesn't fuss anymore when done. If spitting up increases, you might be overfeeding or feeding too fast. YouTube paced bottle feeding.
  • Thank You!

my breastfed baby does this too.. with or without a bottle.  She won't necessarily be hungry, just starts crying right after she's done.  For instance, she could have been nursing for 20 minutes, be asleep and not actively nursing. I take her off the breast and she begins to cry.  Usually, after I burp her, or soothe her a little she'll stop.  We use a pacifier with her, and that helps. I don't recall having this issue with my first daughter, so it caught me by surprise... and while I don't think my baby is the only one to do it, I haven't heard of many others doing it.  But maybe this is the case with your LO too?

  • My baby just turned 5 months and I am still pretty much feeding on demand and it seems like she is drinking anywhere from 20 to 30 oz per day.  I sort of started her on rice cereal, then decided to wait till she's 6 months because she wasn't drinking as much formula.  She is still on level 1 Dr. Brown bottle nipple, but doesn't seem to take too long to finish her 6 oz bottles.  She gets super focused and doesn't stop until she's full (either finish the 6 oz bottle or close to it).

  • We switched to a faster flow right before 3 months with DS2 DS1 it was later. DS2 is 3 months old and gets 7oz bottles and eats 6 times a day and sleeps through the night. BTW there is a FF board now.
