I adore this name. Normally I am into names that are more obscure, elaborate, or aggressively feminine, but there is something so classic, simple, and strong about Johanna, pronounced, as you indicate, Jo-Hannah. I love it very, very much.
Haha! I was not expecting any love from you on this one! I am pleasently surprised.

  • I would say it Jo-Anna, and actually prefer that to the Jo-Hanna, which just sounds like a smoosh name to me.  It's not a bad name, but I do prefer Joanna.

  • I was kind of neutral on it until a couple years ago, but it has TOTALLY grown on me and I love it now. I love both Joanna and Johanna.

  • I would like this name except I used to know a Johanna and she didn't leave a very good impression on me... however I'm sure your child will be adorable and not like her!  Still, suggestions:

Diana (which I love-- only met one and she was nice)

Joanna and Johanna are not the same name and they are not pronounced the same way.

I know this, but every Johanna I've ever met has pronounced it as if it were Joanna.

I've met some of both, so if I see this name written, I always have to ask how they pronounce it.

  • For some reason, I always thought this would be pronounced "Yo-Hawna".  I like it though.  Out of curiosity, what were you thinking as a middle name?

I love the name, but your pronunciation bothers me--it's a family name for me (I'm German-American) and we pronounce it yo-hahna. So the Americanized version grates on me. I also like the similar Joanna (I pronounce it jo-ahna).

Honestly, the conflicting pronunciations have probably dissauded me from ever using it as a first name.
  • I love the name, and was considering it myself.

I think (but please correct me if I'm wrong) that the pronunciation depends on the origin.  There are different pronunciation for French, Spanish, Hebrew, German, that I can think of.

Personally, I prefer Jo-haw-na (where "haw" is like "ho" in "hot"), and this is the pronunciation I am considering.  I am only now realizing that I'll probably have to correct a lot of people throughout to years regarding how we pronounce it.

I love Johanna with your pronunciation.  I strongly dislike the Jo-hawna pronunciation.
