Baby Eye Color!

So, if course I just want a happy, healthy baby boy, but it's still fun to think and predict.
My eyes are green/hazelmMy mother's eyes are green, my dad's are light brown and the rest of my family are either blue or green.
DH's eyes are light brown, MIL's are blue, FIL's are brown. The rest of his family is blue.
What are the odds of DH having coloured eyes, rather than brown?

And what color do you think your baby's eyes will be?

Re: Baby Eye Color!

  • That was a lot to read. A giant tongue twister lol!

Your baby basically has a chance at every color based on that. My guess is brown! It's interesting that both families have the rarest eye color scattered throughout. Never met a green eyed individual.

Haha sorry! I'm hoping that brown will skip him because I forgot to mention, SIL's eyes are dark dark brown. So maybe the recessive gene skipped their generation.
  • Mine are blue. DH's are a blue/green. Based on that we can't make brown eyed babies. The boys both have blue eyes. I've always hoped one kid would have green eyes because I think they're so beautiful. But, I'm guessing we'll have another blue eyed LO.

My parents both have brown eyes. I have blue, my brother has brown, and then my brothers that are twins, one has blue, one has brown. Genetics are weird.

OK, I'm a little confused. Your post makes sense, I'm just not good with understanding genetics. It reminded me of a question I had to answer in 9th grade biology lol so I looked up punnett squares for you and found you a nice sciency link to help you work out your odds. Good luck, this stuff gives me a headache!

  • @staryb‌ lol thanks for the link, it just confused me more unfortunately. I know I will just have to wait and see.
  • You have to keep in mind as well that the eye color your baby is born with might not be the eye color they end up with.

  • This is fun (albeit confusing). Here are our stats:

My eyes are brown, dH's are green/hazel.

My dad's are brown, my mom's are blue.

DH's dad's are blue, his mom's are brown.

We are almost in the same situation! Lol except no green on your side.

This website lets you put in grandparents and parents eye colors and get a prediction:

lol this is way more helpful/less confusing than my link! Except it doesn't include hazel eyes, which DH and I both have. Oh well, still fun.

I'm actually more interested in hair color. DH and I both have brown (DH was born blond) but our parents have brown, red, blond and black so we have no idea what LO will look like!

  • I just did the predictor link and it only came up as my kids having a 6% chance of having green eyes, which they both have.  My husband is blue and I'm brown.  My Mom is brown, Dad green, his Dad is brown, Mom is blue.  And, both of them changed eye color REALLY late.  They both had very blue eyes until about 18 months and then they both changed to green.  They can sometimes look blue-ish, but they're definitely green.  Wondering what this one will be...

  • Because your husband is bringing a dominant gene in (brown) and you have hazel eyes (brown/green), my guess would be that there is a greater chance of brown eyes. Although because you both have recessive genes in you, there is a bit of a chance of lighter colored eyes in your kids.

  • My DH's eyes are blue and mine are brown.

MIL's are green, FIL's are blue.

My mom's are blue, dad's are brown.

DS has bright green eyes and I imagine our kids will have a mix of brown, green, and blue eyes. :)

  • I'm pretty much in the same boat as you except my dad has blue eyes and my mom has the brown eyes. Remembering back to my biology days, I would say you have a 50/50 chance of your little one having light eyes vs. brown eyes. I'm with you though, I really hope our baby has light eyes and knowing that there's at least a 50/50 chance makes me happy. :)

  • We did the punnett squares for eye color and baby has a 73% change of blue eyes and a 27% change for green eyes. You can probably google around and find a tool to compute the punnett squares if you don't know how to do them.

  • I've heard that its what your dad's side has that determines eye colour. Which is true for my family.

My gramma has brown and my grandpa had green. My mom and auntie both have shades of green, my mom is more blue/green and my auntie is yellow-green.

My dad's dad has brown, his mom: blue. My dad has brown and I have brown.

My SO's family are all brown eyed so our DD has brown.

Its kind of like how your mother's side determines how much hair you'll have. Like baldness or not.

  • Both DH and I have blue eyes with DH having a possible green-eyed gene from his mom. DD's eyes are blue and I'm guessing so will LO#2 and anymore that we have.

  • I carry blue and green from my mom and dad, but ended up with blue/green eyes with pie wedges of brown... so not sure! DH carries a blue and brown gene from his parents. I'm interested to see what comes of that. Green eyes would be cool!

  • I find this really interesting, especially in large families.
My paternal grandma had brown eyes, and my gradpa had blue eyes. They had 5 kids, 4 have brown eyes and 1 has blue eyes.
My father has brown eyes, and my mother has blue eyes (FTR, everyone in my mom's fam has blue eyes). They had 6 kids, and 2 have blue eyes, 1 has green eyes, 2 have brown eyes, and 1 has hazel.
I have hazel eyes, and my DH has brown eyes. We have 2 kids, and 1 has hazel eyes just like mine (mostly green with a bit of brown), and 1 has blue eyes.

  • Any color of eyes will be beautiful.

That being said I think the simple answer would be 50\50 brown versus non-brown. As brown is dominant gene, baby will have a 50 percent chance of getting the dad's brown eyes gene and 50 percent chance of getting dads blue eyes gene. It baby gets the brown eyes gene then chances are babys eyes will be brown regardless of yours as brown trumps blue and green.

My husband has the kind of eyes that change color, depending on the light and what he's wearing. I'm really hoping that our kid gets those eyes. Mine are a boring brown, but my dad's are blue, so thankfully there's only a 50% chance the kid will get brown eyes.

Mine are brown and DHs are blue. Both of his parents have brown eyes. My mom has blue and my dad has brown. DD has blue eyes. I think this LO will most likely have brown.

  • My partner and I both have brown eyes, but we each have one blue-eyed parent. That means our kids have a 25% chance of having blue eyes. Our son has brown eyes. It would be wild if #2 was blue!

  • I have light green eyes, DH has green/hazel. My dad is blue and mom is light hazel. His parents are blue and hazel. I would love to have a little green eyed monster! My three older kids from my ex husband all have dark brown eyes (my middle boy had the most beautiful dark hunter green eyes until he was about 15 months, then they changed to deep brown...darn it.) It'll be interesting to see what peanut ends up with since DH has hazel.
  • I was under the impression that blue eyes are strictly a recessive gene so your kids have to get them from grandparents? I may be wrong. I have blue eyes and DH has brown eyes. Neither of my parents have blue eyes, I got them from my grandfather. I'm mostly expecting brown but DH's mom has blue eyes also. I'm also more curious about hair! I have a lot of red hair in my family so she may very well be a ginger! Haha
