How to increase WCM in LO's diet

My LO is nearly 13 months old and recently decided he did not want the midday nursing session so we are down to 2 a day, morning and night. Give this, I have started to give him WCM in a Sippy cup. It took a few attempts for him to take it but now there are no issues.

My issue is more about quantity, and getting enough into him each day. Generally I will serve a Weetabix or Oatmeal for Breakfast, so there is a few oz. of WCM there, then I put 4oz of WCM in a Sippy cup for drinks with lunch, dinner or in between meals. Some days I will have to refill the Sippy cup, others he barely gets through the 4oz for the whole day. I do serve Greek Yogurt each day, he loves that, and will eat a lot of it if I will allow him.

Anyway, how can I get him to drink more WCM daily? My Pedi said no more then 16-18 oz a day. I am assuming that is including breastmilk until he is fully weaned so maybe I need to give him around 6-8oz a day then of WCM to get to this amount. We are close to that, but I am not sure if I am overthinking this and he is getting enough.

Do I include the breast milk in this calculation? I think so but really not sure.

Thoughts/tips?? TIA!

  • I wouldn't worry to much about it. Both my kids took some time to increase their intake of WCM. My pedi was fine with DS only consuming 6-8oz a day. The pedi gave a maximum but not a minimum. Just make sure he gets plenty of other fat and calcium in his diet from things like yogurt, cheese, avocados, olive oil, etc.

  • Yep mine too took some time upping the quantity. At first he would take about 2oz, now he will easily drink 8oz no prob.

My pedi also set a max of 16oz a day. He gets that and lots of cheese plus yogurt. I'm not really worried that he's not getting enough. Ds just started drinking it cold, I'd always warmed it up since he transitioned from BM. But I guess he's a big boy now since he's almost 3.

Like the other ladies said, DS took a little while to up his milk intake.  Now he would probably drink much more than the max amount, if we let him!  He also has a yogurt almost every day and plenty of cheese.

  • M is 19m and he's still not a big fan of WCM.  On average, he only drinks 6oz in an entire day (he's weaned off BM).  He also doesn't like cheese - at least doesn't like string cheese or sliced cheese or cubed cheese etc.  The only way I can get dairy in him is offer him a smoothie daily at snack time.  The smoothie has 4oz WCM, 4oz plain yogurt, and he'll drink the entire smoothie either at snack or finish the rest after dinner.  I also offer him yogurt with granola for b'fast but he only eats 3oz at most.

  • I'm just introduced WCM to DD today. (My supply is tanking so I had been supplementing with formula the last month or so.)

What you have outlined is more or less what I did with each of my boys so I think you already have a good plan in place. :)
