Trouble TTC

Some real gems from the family today (IF ignorance)

Sorry for lack of paragraphs, the ipad can't handle that I guess. As DH and I approach IFV possibly later this year (we have a first consult with a new RE with better rates July 15) we've been slowly sharing our IF with more people that are close to us and that we feel deserve to know. I'm so glad I'm in a place emotionally now where the stupid stuff that people say entertains me more than it bothers me. I thought you ladies could appreciate the comments we got just today: 1.) DH stopped by his parents' place for something (we recently told them but haven't discussed much) and she brought it up, wanting to be sure we had tried having sex every day LOL. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall, but it sounds like DH did a good job clarifying that since we've spent 2.5 years and are about to invest 15K+ into IVF, that yeah, we probably already tried that and a few other things! 2.) I called my dad for Father's Day today and decided to tell him (my mom already knows but I'm not as close with my dad.) I didn't share much, just said that we've been trying for a couple years, and that we were probably going to need IVF. He replies, "so that must mean you're off birth control, right?" Wow...really dad?!? 3.) And since I know my dad might not be able to keep his mouth shut, I told my brother so he wouldn't be out of the loop. My brother is 24 and a bit of a wild child, dates/hooks up with plenty of girls but never attached. He says to me, "I'm starting to wonder if I might be having problems too" WTF??? I asked what the hell he meant and he said "well, there's probably been many times I should have gotten someone pregnant but it's never happened, so maybe I'm infertile." I just laughed, told him he probably wasn't, and that I hoped for his sake if he ever tries to have a child ON PURPOSE that he doesn't have to struggle. I think the average person really has no freaking clue as to how conception actually happens! Anyhow, I figured you ladies would appreciate these doozies!

  • Whoa there. Those are some doozies! Sorry you had to deal with that. I'm quickly starting to find out that people who have very nice manners and think before speaking in every other aspect of life, tend to be the opposite in this world. *hugs*

  • oh geez.that's all I've got. I think I would have laughed at those too.

  • Wow, those really are some gems. Good for you. It's great to have a sense of humor about those kinds of things because we all, at some point, will have something along those lines said to us. Gotta take it all in stride I guess and let it roll off your shoulders.
    Me: 27 DH :28
    NTNP for 3 years 2008-2011

    Apr. 2014 Clomid 50 mg days 3-7 - BFN

  • It is nice to be able to keep a sense of humor with infertility ignorance.  I have had family members worry that they had infertility issues when they were still taking birth control.... My mother also keeps offering to be a surrogate.  Considering she is an educated woman who knows the details of our IF struggles I find this entertaining.
Me 27 DH 29 Married since 2007, together since 2001
Off BC since Febuary 2006 3 Clomid Cycles in 2008- symptomatic, US just showed a tilted uterus, otherwise normal, HSG normal.  DH has an ejaculatory duct obstruction and a congenital absence of the vas deferens.  This is common with cystic fibrosis carriers, but he doesn't have cystic fibrosis. IVF #1 with TESE/ICSI (Antagonist protocol) Aug 2014=BFN (poor embryo quality)   IVF #2 ICSI long lupron protocol November 2014

I guess I really don't tell people IRL. But the people who know me avoid the eye rolls. I am glad you can laugh about it.

  • Gotta love the uneducation of the general public about IF.

My sister who I love but has always been about herself says to me, oh that is weird I don't know anyone who has been through that, it's just weird and then proceeds to talk about herself. A short time later she then asks what type of baby shower I want.. REALLY

  • I called My grandmother on Mother's Day and she said "what's wrong with you? Why won't you have a baby- I hope I live to be a great grandmother!"
She knows we have been trying....
  • @LSantay‌ it's so hard bc everyone wants the same thing... My grandmother thinks she sees signs from god that we are pregnant all the time and I hate to tell her we aren't. Sometimes old people just can't edit their statements before they blurt them out lol
  • @dm28‌ Waiting for my first IUI results (bfn, obv) a coworker whom I shared this with said she knew it was successful because she could "smell" I was pregnant. :-?

  • My goodness @waterlily234..that is CRAZY she said that to you. It is scary the way people just say things w/out thinking.

My MIL is like that...telling my DH it is because I'm not eating enough yams and oysters....YEAH that will do the trick on my IF problems!

Oh...and my DH's boss who is aware of what we are going through told him just a few days ago after my DH shared with him it is very expensive to go through IF.....that he could do the IF procedure in his back yard for free...I was so disgusted when I heard that!

    I've realized through all of this....PEOPLE ARE INSENSITIVE AND CRAZY!   8-}
