Floor mats??

Hi, I have mostly hardwood floors and was going to purchase a large foam alphabet mat to lay DS down on to play but after reading their reviews, I am scared. People commented that they are toxic and cause cancer. Anyone know anything about this or have any suggestions on alternatives?
I feel they say everything causes cancer nowadays but I also don't want to write it off and put my baby in danger!
Anyways, I figured you Ladies might have some opinions or advice!
Thank you!!!
And I hope everyone is enjoying their Father's Day!

Re: Floor mats??

  • I have lots of friends that won't buy them for those reasons - but some of the newer (more expensive) ones mention that they don't have (insert supposed cancer causing acronym here). I hav carpet so I haven't gotten one, but I would not stress out too much and probably get one if we were all hard wood.

I agree with you! It does seem like everything is toxic now!

We have this mat and we are very happy with it:

I did notice that it had an odor when I opened the package, so we let it air out for a day or two outside before we set it up. Once it was inside, we didn't notice any smell. As far as "cancer causing" goes, your child really isn't going to be exposed that much to the mat. I'm more concerned about the 12 hours a day a baby spends in sleep wear that is treated with flame retardants, KWIM?

Do the best you can with making 'cleaner' choices for your baby. Don't make yourself nuts trying to avoid everything that causes certain doom ;)

  • We have one that had better ratings for the more toxic materials. We have hardwoods and their play area has a large mat. I did make sure to buy one without the removable letters/numbers since I was worried they'd try to pull them out and chew on them. So, ours are just solid puzzle pieces.

I'm with @kmc84. I'm much more concerned about the flame retardant pjs. My boys are rough and need a good padded area, so we went ahead and got the mat.

  • Is never heard this either. I do have the letters mat. I did have to train ds not to take them apart, which may seem mean but after you put it together SO many times you might do the same.

Ds doesn't really sit and play on it but he does walk on it. Like pp I wouldn't drive yourself crazy with avoiding things but just do the best you can.

  • WE have hardwood floors throughout and I contemplated buying foam mats for M when he was much younger.  I wasn't as concerned about the toxic material as my concern on how to clean the mats.  I know they are washable but knowing myself, I probably wouldn't be washing them as much as I'd like.  M was a MAJOR drooler for a year (seriously, he drooled nonstop from 5m to 17m) and he'd leave a puddle everywhere.  It just seemed to me so much easier to clean a hardwood floor than a foam mat plus the hardwood floor underneath.

M survived without a foam mat.
