Wait. New Diaper Registry Question

So, we covered the diaper raffle on this board, and I'm in the "don't do it" camp.

However, I was going to put some on the registry.

1) How many of each size
2) What size boxes

And most importantly, what happens if I get 10 boxes of newborn (I didn't put ANY on the registry, but who knows) and can't use them? Can I return them without a receipt? I not, I'm not going to bother putting them on the registry. I'm all about registering for what I know I'll use. I know I'll use diapers, but...no clue how many or what kind, so I need to know I can return/exchange without a receipt.

Re: Wait. New Diaper Registry Question

  • I put one box of each size 1-4 mainly for brand. Don't open the boxes or bags until you need to use them because you can return/exchange. The consultant at BRU said that if something is on my registry I have until 1 year after EDD to make returns and exchanges without a receipt.

  • My understanding is that you can return / exchange unopened diaper boxes for a larger size if need be. I registered for 5 boxes of newborn simply because we are having twins. I believe the number of used diapers per day is somewhere between 8 to 10. STMs feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

  • Yes, you can return/exchange. How many boxes per size just depends on your kid. Neither of mine ever fit into newborn, but they were monster babies. DS1 was 9lbs and started off in 1s then switched to 2s after a few weeks. DS2 was 10lbs11oz and wore 1s while we were in the hospital but we switched to 2s almost right away at home because he kept leaking out of them.

Box size doesn't really matter unless you need to exchange them. To exchange/return somewhere they have to carry that size box. I know BRU carries the huge boxes but most stores don't. I did most of my exchanges at Walmart because it was a lot closer than BRU, but for the huge boxes I would have had to go to BRU.

What if people just buy diapers from somewhere other than our registry like a grocery store or drug store? Without receipts would we be able to return/exchange them somewhere else if we don't know where they came from?

Yep. I'm not sure about all stores but I didn't most of my returns at Walmart. I didn't have any receipts but as long as they carried that brand/size they would exchange it. It didn't matter where they were bought.

I guess I didn't think just one box would work, since once it's purchased, it's gone off of the registry. So, I thought if I wanted a few boxes, I should put a specific number on there so they stay (not that someone will buy me 5 boxes of diapers).

Ok, good. We registered at Target, but I hear horror stories of them not letting you return more than 2 things without a receipt per YEAR. That's not helpful if you had a wedding/baby shower at ALL. As long as I can return to Wal*mart (in the same plaza area for us), I'll be ok.

  • Target is picky about returning items up to a certain amount per year, sans receipt) but are pretty good about exchanging diapers for a different size since its not an actual return where they have to give you money back.

Also if you find you have a box of diapers that you cannot find a place to return/exchange you can always sell them on CL.  We did this with a box we purchased off of Amazon. No stores carry that size near us so we sold it for what we paid for it.

  • I would not put any NB diapers on the registry as they only go up to 10 lbs, but size 1 diapers fit starting at 8 lbs, so you won't really need them much unless your LO is a preemie or really small. If you want any NB diapers though, I suggest just buying a small box yourself.

Babies need 300-350 diapers the first month of life (10-12 per day) and then 8-10 per day (250-300) for about the first 6-7 months. DS was 7 lbs 15 oz at birth (so practically 8 lbs) and was in size 1 diapers for 2 months (~600-650 diapers), size 2s for almost 4 months (~1100-1200 diapers), and size 3s for almost a year (many, many diapers).

I would be most cautious about sizes 1 and 2. I don't think you can get too many size 3 or 4 diapers. As they get older, their growth slows down and they are in a diaper size for a lot longer than they were initially.

  • I agree with others about not registering for newborn diapers and also if you cant return or exchange you can always sell them on Craigslist like PP said and also I see them all the time on Facebook swap n shop groups.

I live in an area where Craiglist is unheard of. I'd have to drive an hour to sell anything or buy anything on there. It's a shame.

But no, for SURE not registering for any newborns, and I'm only putting one or two boxes of 1s on there.

  • Honestly, I didn't register for any diapers and I received enough to last through my son's first 3 months! Since I didn't register for any, we received every brand under the sun and I'm glad we did. If I would have registered, it would have been for Pampers and from day one, my son leaked with Pampers and had a reaction to Huggies and Luvs. It was great that we had options to see what worked best.

I didn't register for any diapers. DD was 8 lbs 9 oz at birth and we used quite a few newborn diapers. They used size ones at the hospital but they seemed too big to me. DD is 17 months and is still wearing size 3 for daytime diapers.

This has been posted before but definitely look into Amazon mom for diapers.

  • I'm a lurker, but wanted to weigh in on Target registry. We used Target to register for our wedding. Everyone at my shower claimed they had what they purchased checked off on the registry list, however I received multiples of almost everything! When DH tried to return we had such a hard time, because we did not have gift receipts for anything. I wasn't able to return anything on my 1st trip despite speakin to a manager. I went home printed out my registry, return policy, bad-mouthed them on Facebook. Friends and family who had receipts offered to send them, most didn't keep thinking it was on the registry and I wouldn't need. On my 2nd trip they tried telling me no again. I pitched a major fit (i hate to do that) spoke to another set of managers and finally after arguing for a while they took everything back. I love Target as a store but will NEVER register with them again. If you do please note somewhere for those who may buy for you to please include a receipt when they give you a gift so you have no issues later.

I'm not going to do that.

I registered with them as well and had no issues. It seems like people didn't actually tell someone they bought something off of the list. A lot of people do that, especially non-internet savvy people. "It was on the list, I bought it, it should come off the list." But. How? You have to show the cashier the list, obviously, but shockingly, lots of people don't get it.

I thought so too, but most everyone claimed they did buy in store and did give the registry to the cashier. Maybe it was a glitch at the time (it was 4years ago). Maybe no one wanted to admit they made a mistake when purchasing. Lol I was just so upset they would not take the returns. I got double on almost everything it was such a fight. I am glad you did not have the same issue.
