Engorgement

Are any of you ladies dealing with engorgement? I am ff and my milk just came in last night. My breasts are huge, hard as a rock, and painful. I am taking Motrin, used cold compresses all night and took a benadryl. Any suggestions on how to get relief? I am going to get cabbage tomorrow to try frozen cabbage leaves.
How long does this last?
My ob just told me to wear a supportive bra and use ice packs but didn't say it would be this bad.

Re: Engorgement

  • I agree with katburdette... Hot shower and massage them gently. Plus the Motrin, that is what I do.

The cabbage leaves should really help! You don't need to freeze them, just put the cabbage in the fridge. When you are ready to put them on, take a rolling pin and roll them so the veins crack and then apply them vein side to your boobs in a tight sports bra. Good luck, hope you get some relief!

  • There is a breastfeeding thread that can help with this. @AmyG*‌ has been really helpful answering questions.
  • Ha! Oh sorry :( but maybe Amy still has some advice she can offer.
  • Peppermint can help dry you up, too. It really is painful. I weaned my DD sort of suddenly and the pain was awful. It lasted maybe 4-7 days? Just keep taking Motrin and definitely do the cabbage leaves! I hope you find relief soon!
  • My pain only lasted a few days. I was told to wear a sports bra instead of regular ones if nothing else it was more comfy. Hopefully you get relief soon.
  • I've heard that Sudafed can dry you up too. Check out Kellymom.com, that is a really good resource.

Thanks for all the responses, I am definitely going to try as many as I can. Hopefully this doesn't last too long.

  • Check out fearlessformulafeeder as well. I know it's really painful- I think postpartum days 5-7 were the worst for me. I wore a snug sports bra 24/7, took Motrin around the clock and used cabbage leaves. I also iced using bags of frozen veggies as often as I could. It hurt to handle my breasts to put the cabbage leaves and ice packs on but it would help once I stopped having to touch them. I know that you can also do a small amount of hand expression for relief (not a lot because you don't want to stimulate more production) but I just didn't want to touch them at all so I never tried that. Lastly, if it's possible for your H to deal with LO when crying, do that as much as you can. The twins were still in NICU when i was engorged so this wasn't something I dealt with as much but if I was there and they started crying the aching in my breasts would get so much more painful.

Good luck- just keep telling yourself it will pass.
