calling in sick...

Anybody else calling in sick a lot? I'm 7 weeks 5 days and I haven't been to work for a full day since last week sometime. I'm really not a pansy but it just gets ridiculous especially in regards to energy. Trying to go back tomorrow since haVing two days off on Sick leave. Sigh. ...

Re: calling in sick...

  • Yes-and I'm a supervisor so I finally decided to tell my employees today because went in late and left early. I was hoping to wait until 12 weeks but that's not gonna happen. My boss has known for a few weeks and is very understanding. Some days I'm ok but sometimes I'm just no good, like today.

  • Ive been having to do shorter days as well.  Im not sleeping well at night, and by noon im falling asleep at my desk.  About once a week, I will just call out for the day, sleep until noon, and usually can make it through the rest of the week.

  • On Monday I went in for half a day because I physically was unable to get out of the recliner to take a shower (the recliner was where I wound up after the gym) - otherwise I've managed to make it through every day so far.

  • I called off last Friday because I was so nauseous the night before, I got no sleep! It's hard for me to call off (because of guilt). I have a caseload of close to 200 probationers so it makes it difficult to not be here.

  • I havent been able to make a full day in like 2 weeks now! And then outta no where i got freaking cellulitis on my face! Was in the ER yesterday and ive got to go back today... i have a bad feeling they are going to admit me when i go back because they kept saying if it didnt get better they would have to! An infection on your face is a super big deal! Plus after i left yesterday i started spotting like red blood so im really concerned! :( happy friday the 13th everyone!
  • I've mostly worked full days but I've had a couple days where I've had to go home early. Wednesday morning i went home for three hours and took a solid nap and came back to work. Yesterday I had to take the afternoon off. This has been my worst "feel bad" week I've had so far but today I feel great. Seems like I can gague how I'm going to feel off how my morning workouts go.

  • I'm out for the summer, but I am doing committee work this week and next. Yesterday, I was feeling like crap and I just put my head on my computer. My single, childless coworker asked if I was tired, I said yes, she said I know what you mean. Chasing after a toddler at home is exhausting. Hopefully the fatigue passes for you in second tri :)

  • I have left work early a couple of times. Most because of complete fatigue and nausea. My doctor filled out an fmla paper for me so I can leave work if I need to. But I'm trying to not use it much.
  • I'm contemplating calling out tonight- have appointments all morning then am supposed to work 12p-10p, with a full moon and Friday the 13th the ER is certain to be a looney bin and I'm not sure my sleep deprived pregnant body can handle it. (However I said I might call in last week too and I end up going in everytime because I'm a giant pansy- plus we leave to go out of town tomorrow and I feel like calling in the day before vacation always looks shady)

  • I thank the Lord every day that this is summer time and I am off from work. It would be tough if I still had to teach all day and feel this tired.

  • I must be a terrible boss. Whole I have been sick and thrown up on the way to work, a ft work and home I'm still here working ny 40+ hours. I have a girl who is also 8 weeks along and she has been calling in and complains all the time. I've been trying to hold her to her schedule since the staff depends on her during our busiest time. I haven't had a lot of empathy since I'm doing the same stuff. Guess I should be cutting her a little more slack.
  • I feel so much better that I am not the only one calling in sick.  My mom keeps telling me to suck it up and deal with it, but I am pretty sure she wasn't nauseous and dry heaving 99% of the time.  She said she used to wake up, throw up a little and be fine (I wish that was the case).  I have to work through June and then I will be done for 2 months but I can't even get through that.  I call off sick about once a week, but I only when I throw up more than 4 times before work.  I also leave at 2 every day (with a dr's note) because afternoons are my worst time.
  • @stef1001, my mom has been the same way, very "opinionated" to put it nicely lol I think she forgets what pregnancy is like. It's not the end of the world but esp the first tri is very difficult.

  • Thanks!  I love her but I don't think she remembers at all.
  • I feel super lucky that I'm able to work from home, because I've done that two days this past week. And I get way more done at home than I do in the office because I can take a quick nap or just lay down with my laptop and do things that I'm not able to concentrate on when all can do is focus on not throwing up everywhere, or getting ridiculous headaches. Looking so forward to this phase being over...

  • Toughing it out over here. I couldn't imagine calling in to work that often or leaving early almost every day. I am trying to save every possible sick day up for when I am on maternity leave.

  • I would no longer have a job if I called in like that :( so I tough it out.

Those of you who say you would no longer have a job need to get fmla and take care of yourselves.
  • Those of you who say you would no longer have a job need to get fmla and take care of yourselves.

At this point I am able to tough it out. I really want to save fmla for maternity leave. Although, financially I don't think we can afford to take the full twelve weeks :( We are saving and will reevaluate as it gets closer.
  • I'm on a 6 week placement for school right now, so for any days I call in sick, I need to make up a day, ad lose another days pay from work. I had placement booked four months in advance and paid for, and my boss had already hired coverage for me.  If I cancelled placement, I would have been out the $1200 tuition as well as the 6 weeks pay.

I didn't plan to tell my placement supervisors, but we are together for 8 hours a day with no breaks except lunch.  My MS has been really bad, and I was finding myself getting really nauseous having to go 4+ hours with nothing to eat (no outside food allowed within the program).  I eventually had to tell them, and now I can pop out of the room for a couple minutes to eat a banana, then re-enter placement.  They have been really understanding which definitely helps.

Back to my job in three weeks, probably won't call in sick there either - my boss lets me step out of the room to have a snack, and we take the kids outside to play 2x a day which definitely helps with the MS.  I'll be bringing an adult size chair back to work with me though, I don't think I can manage 8 hours on my feet steady, will need to sit a few times throughout the day.

  • I called in sick once already, then had to go in late the next day because my dog needed to go to the emergency vet (pancreatitis).  I'm tired all the time too, I slept for about twelve hours on Friday and I still barely had enough energy to get some laundry and dishes done today.  So tired!

  • I say suck it up if you can. It doesn't look good calling off to your employer and I agree with saving PTO or FMLA for the times when you're really gonna need it either for appointments or after delivery. I can't speak for how sick everyone else it but at this point I think my MS and exhaustion are at their worst but I still wouldn't think of missing a day of work. If I feel like I'm gonna hurl I run to the bathroom and take 5 minutes if I need to. The MS comes and goes in waves throughout the day so other than when I am actively vomiting/dry-heaving, it's on with the work day!

  • I am 7 weeks and just opened a new restaurant, working 6 days a week, 10-12 hours a day. That's exhausting for a non-pregnant person. I haven't called in sick, but my boss knows so if I'm going to be sick or need to take a small break to eat something, it's ok. The tough part is my coworkers not knowing and probably thinking I can't handle it.
  • No call outs yet. Been actively trying not to. I need to save up my PTO. I have about a two week vacation and a 4 day weekend this summer to make sure I have PTO for.

Plus I need to make sure I have time saved up for late pregnancy when I have appointments weekly and have to see doctors that don't have evening hours (we have to see all of the doctors at some point during the pregnancy.
