Baby Clothes Sizing Is Weird.

I've put off washing the mountains of baby clothes I've received as gifts and hand-me-downs until today. I can't get over how much the sizes vary! I have some newborn stuff that looks barbie doll sized and others that would fit my cocker spaniel. WTF? Sorting when I'm done drying is going to be a nightmare- I have no idea how to organize it when the sizes vary so much. Do any STM+ have any advice on how to do this? Do I just hold them up to each other  and eyeball it?

Re: Baby Clothes Sizing Is Weird.

  • The only thing I found huge variations with baby clothes sizes was with Gerber clothes. For those items if it said 3-6 month, it fit DD well between 0-3 months. The few others I would just eyeball.

  • I agree with the previous poster, Gerber sizing is way off! Otherwise, I find baby clothes sizing to be just as inconsistent as adult clothing. You'll get used to how different brands fit your baby (i.e., I know that Carter's pretty much fits my kids to size -- up to 3m in size 3m -- while other brands run bigger -- DS1 is almost 5 and on the bigger side for his age yet can still wear size 4 from Gymboree).
  • I find quite a few brands to be off in sizes. I don't even buy Gerber because of the differences. I think holding them up to each other will help.

I tend to stick with the same brings for infants to know how they fit. I tend to stick with Carter's because I like it a lot.

Wss. Word for word. Gerber is funky, they don't fit my DD chunky legs at all. Carter's always a winner. DD has some 6 months onesies that still fit her well, and she's 10 months. Just play it by ear and size it up like you said.

Agree on the Gerber stuff, also BRU brand (koala baby?) runs on the small size as well. I've also found GAP runs a little larger.
Plus, like PPs said, different brands will fit differently depending on your baby's shape.

  • And don't wait too long to move up sizes.  My DD didn't wear a couple things very much at all because I thought it looked too big, and by the time I put it on her it was too small.

  • Yep, it is! DD is 21months and has items in her closet (all that fit) ranging from 6-9 months to 2t.

We put two sizes in at a time and use carters clothing as our measurement tool, if an item is close in size to our current carters it goes in the closet.

  • On Carter's sizing is a size 3 more like a 0-3 or a 3-6? I have a lot that just say 3, 6, 9, etc, and I didn't know which category to put them in

  • Carters 3 month is similar to 0-3
  • Thank you all! I will use the Carter's as a guide for which drawer to put things in. I completely agree about the gerber- they are soo tiny! I think I'm going to return the new ones and exchange them for something else. I still have quite a few gerber hand me downs that I'll keep and use though.

  • Eye ball it! I ended up organizing the hand-me downs more effectively that way- also erred on the side of things being a little too big at first, then you get more wear out of them. With spitting up and blow out diapers we went through many outfits a day.

I hated that gerber was super small. I missed out on using some clothes because I didn't even realize the sizes were so different until it was too late.  Good thing you caught that early on!

  • FTM here. I just washed all of our DS newborn clothing. When I compared them to 0 to 3 mos. Several seemed to be about the same size. Gerber especially seemed to run small.
