This segment is being buzzed about on other DE boards also.  It sounds awful.  I feel like sending Katie a photo of my huge stomach and saying, guess who the biological mom of my daughter will be?

An egg donor is just that -- an egg donor.  Not the bio mom.

I have a feeling Katie is going to get some mail from DE moms.

[ETA:  Just want to make clear that I think a woman using a surrogate can be a bio mom also.  "Mom" is about intention.  An egg donor never was and never will be the "mom" of the resulting child.]

  • @brooklynesque - My PIP's and I are currently negotiating contracts for our upcoming cycle.  My attorney and I did a partial review yesterday.  For some reason their attorney referred to me as "Surrogate Mother".  I loathe that term, my attorney is changing each one to Gestational Carrier.  I use the term surrogate because it's easier, people know more what I'm talking about if I tell them I'm a surrogate than if I say I'm a GC, but I hate that surrogate means "replacement".

    GSx2 for T&B - EDD 6/21/2015 - They're having a GIRL!

This exactly! How hard is it to keep saying egg donor as opposed to bio mom? Both families seemed like lovely people, so I hope Katie's ignorance doesn't cause hard feelings between them.

  • I found it frustrating that the egg donor was referred to as the biological mother. Maybe I would have been less annoyed by it if she called her the genetic mother? Perhaps I have it wrong in my head, but I DO think that DEgg mothers have a biological part in the process. It was really heart warming to see the relationship amongst the child & her parents.

    TTC since March 2012
Dx: Unexplained IF, Arcuate Uterus, Minimal Endometriosis, Poor Embryo Quality
Tx History: 1 Injects+TI, 5 IUIs, 3 IVFs, 1 FET = all BFN and full of heartbreak
Plan: Waiting to see if our potential donor is a match for DE IVF #1

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
  • First off, I agree in many way and do not want to come across as insensitive. The terms chosen were those of the family. Jim and Janet are secure enough to know I, as, their anonymous egg donor never will pose a threat. We all are a family. We communicated for a few months before we taped this segment. Our bond was instant.

I fully understand my part as an anonymous egg donor; however I chose to make myself available to be found for several reasons: normal curiosity of family and or children and medically. I will never seek out any of the families as I believe each have the right to raise their children and determine what is best for their families.

This being said, don't let the terms ruin a beautiful thing. It may not be for everyone, but it works for us.

    We are blessed beyond belief!

  • Surprised you found us!
Here are my thoughts/reactions.  I don't think the term family applies here, at least not for me.  I am an egg donor as well.  If a child/adult conceived as a result of my donation wanted to meet me, I would be all for it.  If they were looking for "family," whoa there.  That's just not the relationship I have with them.  I see my role as very different from, say, someone who placed a child for adoption.  My role is important, but very minimal in the grand scheme of things, and I am definitely not family.  I do prefer "egg donor," or "genetic mother" if you must, to biological mother.
  • There is no doubt @cjolana1 that you are blessed to have found each other again! It is a beautiful thing, and I think you hit it on the head: everyone is secure in the situation and there is no reason to see one another as a threat as KC suggested at the end. It just goes to show that everyone involved has the best interest of the child at heart. I can only hope that we find an egg donor who we can be proud of for our future child.

  • @cjolana1 -- thanks for posting!  BTW I think it's wonderful that you were willing to meet the family and be known to them.  Our donor says she's willing to do so also, and I very much want my child(ren) to meet her someday.  They will be curious and she will obviously be an important part of their history.  My problem with the Katie show was with the terminology.  I wish they had had a fertility therapist or someone like that on to help with that part.
  • I think everyone has a slightly different situation. Our donor wanted to be completely anonymous, only contact through agency for dire medical reasons. She was something like a five time proven donor ( with us, it was the last cycle she could do within FDA guidelines), so there were a lot of potential kids (including triplets from what I understand) who could potentially be contacting her. My husband and I preferred anonymous donation as well.

I agree with this and as a recipient of an ANONYMOUS donation (and I'm forever grateful to my Egg Donor), I also feel strongly about the terms that the show used and that may not be the best or most appropriate for everyone's situation, even of it works for the family that was profiled.

Me: AMA, DOR, undetectable AMH, carrier of SMA, MTHFR homozygous C677T, high cytokines, low IGg B cells, Factor XIII V34l mutation, High Anti-Phosphatidylethanolmine, borderline hypothyroid and mildly insulin resistant.

MH: No known issues, aside from MTHFR.

Recommendations from RI: LIT, Humira, IVIG, Lovenox, Baby Aspirin, Folic Acid, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.

Currently taking:  Pre-Natal vitamins, Foltanx, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.

When cycling also taking: Baby Aspirin, Lovenox, Humira and IVIG.

TTC since 7/11/09..with medical intervention starting in 2010, including 4 failed IVF's and 6 failed IUI's...only "success" was a chemical pregnancy in 11/2012 (credited to use of DE).

    FET #1 (11th cycle) on 8/23/13 = BFN.

FET #2 (12th cycle) Transfer of last two (day 6) donor egg blasts on 1/22/14 = BFP, EDD = 10/10/14 (please stick little BOY!)

    My favorite breed:
