3rd Trimester

bacterial vaginosis

Gross. I have had BV for a little over a month. They first had me on a pill, then the metro gel and now another round of the metro gel. I don't know why it won't go away and stay away. I have never had anything like this before and I am getting so frustrated. I don't even have symptoms other than my lady bits feel a little off, but nothing too different from regular preg symptoms. No smell, no discharge, no itching. I hate putting all the meds in my body while I am pregnant, but I know that left untreated, BV can be dangerous. I follow all of the regular instructions, keeping dry and clean, cotton undies, loose clothing, unscented soap . . just wondering if anyone else has any other suggestions that I can do along with the medicine to try any make sure this doesn't come back.

Eat yogurt daily. It really helps.

  • I do. I eat Greek yogurt once or twice a day, usually blueberry. Should I be eating plain, maybe? Or activia or something?

  • The gel never worked for me. The pill was the only thing that worked and I needed to be treated twice with it, and then it was gone. I have not had any issues in this pregnancy but in my last the infection caused PPROM.

I haven't had it once this time and this is what I do: I only use Dove original white bar soap (per dr suggestion), cotton underwear and no panty liners because they don't breathe, I change my underwear once during the day and again before bedtime, I shower every night and make sure to dry down there very well before putting on underwear, I do not wear any tight fitting pants/spandex/etc, and whenever I go to the bathroom I always use wet wipes (unscented, no chemicals, nothing) and then dry with TP.

It sounds like a lot but I am prone to them during pregnancy and it caused my membranes to rupture last pregnancy at 22 weeks. I'm not taking any chances this time so I took all my doctor's suggestions.

The bolded is definitely the right approach.  It is a lot, but some people are more prone to it than others, and it varies from pregnancy to pregnancy as well.  I had it 4 times when I was pregnant with my daughter.  The only thing I would add is to watch your sugar intake, and maybe ask your doctor about taking a pro-biotic after you're done with the treatment, it could help bring everything back in balance sooner so you avoid getting it again.

  • I have had it 3 or 4 times this pregnancy, luckily mine didn't have any major symptoms either. I used one kind of gel the first two times and then they switch me over to a different kind of gel, worked wonders and cleared it right up. My doctor also recommended probiotics, although I had been taking them even before TTC. Like PPs said its just more common in some women than others.

  • Try using a hair dryer after you shower. Seriously. Get everything nice and dry and like pp said, change underwear often.

My body is super sensitive even before I got pregnant. Activia yogurt worked best for me and I only use Dove soap or even Johnson and Johnson baby wash because it is hypoallergenic. I still take baths however because I'm 37 weeks and my back and pelvic bone are killing my life. I usually only have trouble with BV when I increase how often I have intercourse. I've done some research so semen from the male has a lot to do with a woman's change in her ph levels which can cause BV. Hope this helps.
  • The pills have never worked for me. The things that I found to work best is to take Ultimate Flora for vaginal health, eat yogurt and drink kefir, and take apple cider vinegar baths. I definitely cannot take bubble baths anymore (this kills me!) and I make sure that I do not use anything with fragrance in it. Changing your undergarments 2-3 times a day is a good idea, especially if you live in a warm climate, to keep everything down there comfortable and dry!
  • Well, i just got diagnosed with GD. Doc says that once my diet balances out the BV should go away. At least that is one silver lining to GD. Ugh.

Thrush (yeast infection) and bv can mimic eachother. Bv often has a fishy odour, and thin watery discharge. Whereas yeast discharge is usually thicker. I know- I treat these things daily as an STI nurse.
  • Vagisil PH balanced wash for your area! I swear by it. I haven't had a signal VB since I started using it.
