What bags are best?

What bags are best to keep milk in? Are there better ones for fridge or freezer? What is the difference in the bags?

Re: What bags are best?

  • I second @casey78 on the Lansinoh - with the caveat that medala bags are my only point of comparison. I like Lansinoh because I'm able to lay them flat in the freezer, which makes for more compact storage... Medela bags were cut differently so the bags never really laid flat.

  • I use the medela bags because I can pump directly into them and because they stand up in the fridge, but they are a bit pricey. I can sometimes get deals on Amazon. Someone suggested cutting slits in regular bags (like target brand) so you can pump directly into those, haven't tried that yet but I plan to!

  • the bags differ in storage capacity and thickness/feel of the plastic. i think they all have double zips on them, but some may have better or worse closures.

for storing in the fridge, i always just left BM in bottles with caps on them. you can write the day of the week on the caps with a dry-erase marker to keep track of what was pumped when.

i mostly used tommee tippee brand bags for freezing. i kept finding them in tj maxx/marshall's and they were a good deal, so i bought a lot. i never had issues with them. i also used the target brand ones, but a few of them ripped during the defrosting process (i liked to break up the milk into chunks while still in the bags, then pour the chunks into a bottle).

  • Thanks for all the help. I didn't even think about how they would lay in the freezer!

I've used medela, up and up and lansinoh. I had no problems with any this far. The medela ones are smaller and quite pricey. I've found that the lansinoh and up and up are pretty much the same, but I like the up and up one best because their cheaper.

  • I've been using the Lanisoh ones lately, but haven't thawed any milk from them yet.  I bought bags from Hygeia, and I seriously love them.  They're nice and thick and feel very sturdy, and I never had a leak with them.  The Lanisoh ones feel really flimsy in comparison, so I'm going to have to remember to thaw them in a bowl in the fridge in case they leak!

  • I use lansinoh and they are great. I haven't had any issues with them and I refrigerate and freeze with them. My sister recommended them to me. She uses them for blended food for her son (he has a feeding tube) so she is a little more aggressive with them too and hasn't had too many issues. It's good to hear the target ones are good too! I'm always there and would love to save money if possible. I also tried the Madela ones and didn't like them. Too stiff and not as big.
  • @BootsOrHearts What a freaking awesome idea! I've only used Medela Pump & Save so I can pump directly into them but could really turn any bag into a Pump & Save one I suppose.  I am sooo trying it.

Oh totally! The savings for both are great. We recently just switched to cloth wipes too and I like them better than disposable, can't believe I didn't switch sooner!

I bought them, grabbed a pack here and there when I found them on sale so it's a mishmash but hey they clean poo!

  • @BootsOrHearts so that totally works! Just cut a slit at the top of the bag and use the medela adapter. Awesomeness!

  • I'm another fan of lanisnoh. They freeze flat and are reliable.
