WWYD dental work.

This might get long, apologies.

Several years ago I had a root canal. Shortly after began years of medical issues that I kept insisting were because of the tooth. Doctors, neurologists, dentists, no one could figure it out.

The issues started as minor facial numbness on my left. Then pain and headaches. Eventually the numbness/nerve damage spread to my entire left side of my body. I have vision and hearing loss on that side too. That eye constantly waters, I sometimes drool a little too, it's so sexy.

It feels like when you have novicane, I haven't lost movement. I have horrible pain in that arm and other various places on that side. Any time I sit on the toilet or a chair where there is any pressure in my body (not like a couch) my left leg falls asleep almost instantly, there's always that annoying almost falling asleep tingly feeling though.

I finally found an endodontist who has a cool CT machine for teeth. I've had several CTs and MRIs on my c spine and brain, but no one has looked there.

He walked into the room after he looked at the scan with a freaked out look. I have a huge abscess and the other dude missed a root and left some cement or something up there. It's spread to the tooth next to it and is putting loads of pressure on my facial nerves. That pressure caused nerve damage that eventually traveled to other areas on the same side. He said I'm very lucky I didn't end up hospitalized.

My drs diagnosed me with unexplained peripheral neuropathy a few years ago and give me b12 shots to help. I also takes loads of ibuprofen.

Anyway... The endo wants to root canal both. That'll cost me $1700 out of pocket. We do not have that much money and would have to use our emergency credit card or use the care credit card. The other option, I see, is to just pull it. It's all the way in the back and I don't think it would be noticeable. That would be $200 or so.

I kind of want that because I know it's be done, no more tooth to slowly kill me. DH says I'll look like a hillbilly :/ I realllyyyy don't care about that. I'm so sick of this pain and numbness.

What would you do?

  • I would probably lean towards pulling it. You can always have it replaced later with a bridge or implant if it bothers you. Is there any way to go back to the original Dentist and see if they can pay for it since they're the ones that messed it up in the first place?
FWIW, I have a gap in the back molars from a pulled tooth that was too far gone for a root canal, you can't tell at all and it doesn't bother me.

  • I'm sorry you have had to deal with all of that over a botched root canal.

My aunt struggled for years with pain that we suspect was brought on by bad dental work.

I think, if I were you, and the pulling the tooth for $200 would solve the issues, I'd probably go that route for now since you say you don't have the money for the route canal (and frankly I'd be worried that it wouldn't end up solving the issue).  Then maybe you could save up money for an implant down the road if you wanted to replace the tooth.

  • Another vote for pull it, AND I'd be talking to that dentist or their office to get them to pay for this, and possibly some for pain and suffering. Years of what you went through because of THEIR mistake is ridiculous.

Please keep us updated! Would love to hear what you decide and how your outcome is. Good luck!

  • OMG that's horrific.  I'd pull it but not without a strongly worded conversation with the original doctor where you push for THEM to cover it.

  • I would likely get the botched root canal tooth extracted and then root canal and crown the other tooth. Loosing two teeth next to each other can put unnecessary pressure and stress on your remaining teeth.

I must have misunderstood. Are you potentially getting two teeth pulled? Or just the adjacent tooth to the original botched tooth?

It would be both. Both have root canals already. One was wrong and the infection spread and leeched into the other tooth too. I can't really explain it, it was clear once I saw the ct and saw all of the different views.

I'm not a sue happy person either, and contacting a lawyer doesn't mean you're money hungry for pain and suffering damages but you really should not be paying a cent more than you already have

Dentists carry malpractice insurance. It's not like you're personally suing him/her if that makes you feel any better. Without knowing more, I can't give you a ton of advice, but do your best to get your original post-op x-ray. I'm really surprised no one else ever caught this.

I'm betting it just takes the threat of legal action for them to cover it because that is a BIG mistake. Like really really big, which is why you shouldn't have to pay for it.

I know. I've had so many MRIs and CTs and dental X-rays. It's that cool tooth machine that is my hero.

Yeah, technology is amazing! We do not have the CT Cone Beam Scan in my office, but the oral surgeon two doors down has the machine. It's amazing! I'm glad you have found the source of the problem, and I hope you are able to treat the issue as easily as possible.
