Pumping help

My DD is 4 months old. I have been back to work for a little over a month. The first month I worked 3 days a week and the last two weeks has been FT. I've noticed that my supply when pumping has gradually declined. I nurse her right before I leave for work and when I get home most of the time (depending on when she last ate). My milk is fine when nursing at home. Pumping is my problem. I previously could pump twice for 10 -15 min and get what I needed for the following day. Now I have to pump 3x for like 20 or more min. I have tried to restart the letdown on my pump (madela free style). I've tried watching videos of her or looking at photos. It makes me really sad and nervous.
I didn't think I would like like nursing before I had her and love it. My long term goal is for her first year. My short term goal is 6 months . Waiting to hear back from my LC but until then any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Pumping help

  • I had a similar situation with DD1.  Are you drinking enough water while you are at work?  I had a long commute and would power pump the entire way to work.

  • I have a freestyle and I find that using it for only a few days starts to hurt my supply so I have to use my manual pump instead. For me the freestyle just didn't have enough suction to do the job. I honestly get twice the milk when use my manual pump.

You can also try breast compressions, that really helps me. Google 'hands on pumping'.

  • Thanks everyone! I had much better yield today. She takes between 2-3 bottles while I'm away from her. It often depends on how long/often she naps. I changed the nipple cover or whatever it's called on one breast and pumped longer. I drink plenty of water but changed when I started. I began drinking on my way to work vs starting when I got there. I also prayed a lot which I think was the greatest help. I think I am going to order some extra parts. Pumping 3x a day will be a must! I really appreciate everyone's support. The LC suggested more milk supplement by mother love. Has anyone tried this product?
