Do you have any rooms in the house that are off-limits to LO (using closed doors or baby gates all the time.)

Re: Off-limits

  • Nothing is really off limits, but I keep the full bath and our bedroom closed 90% of the time. Bathroom is closed because she started trying to get into the rub, and bedroom is shut because our cat likes to get in there. My husband is allergic and we keep the bedroom as a "no cat" area.

Bathroom, kitchen, basement, and upstairs (storage) are completely off-limits for now. We always keep the door to our bedroom shut when we are not in there, but we sometimes take him in there with us. He spends the most time in the living room and his bedroom.

ETA: I feel like I am being super restrictive/controlling after reading that most people don't have that many off-limits areas!

Edited to also add: Oh, oops, he obviously gets baths in the bathroom. But it's off-limits otherwise.
  • Yup. Bathrooms, he loves to splash in a toilet and put his toys in them.
His brothers rooms, too many small choking hazards. The kitchen, unless we are in there with him. He climbs up and holds onto the oven handle!

  • We live in a house with SO's sister and BIL so we have the door to the upstairs shut and locked and we also keep the laundry room/furnace room door closed.

  • Bathrooms are the only rooms, and just in the past month when he started throwing EVERYTHING into them. He can go in and explore if I'm in there getting dressed or taking a shower but he doesn't have free reign like with the rest of the house.

  • Grayson is usually only in the living room. I have gates up to all the other rooms but that's mostly to keep the dogs out of Grayson's toys in the living room.

  • Both bathrooms are off limits as much as possible (Aiden needs to get in there so we can't always use the hook and eyes.  We also have a "spare room" that doesn't have a door but is a catch all for a lot of stuff so we have a baby gate across it.

  • We block off different rooms depending on what DD is up to but no room is really off-limits if she's supervised.

We close the doors to all the bedrooms and bathrooms, and we gate off the kitchen. My child would demolish every room if we let her roam free.
  • Both bathrooms and basement door. LO is obsessed with climbing on the toilet and flushing the handle
  • We keep the office door shut and the gate up on the stairs so he has free range of the downstairs which is living room, playroom/dinning room, kitchen and our room and bathroom.

  • We have an open floor plan. The only off limit rooms are the bathrooms and laundry room. We have found him playing in the toilet a few times that ds1 left the bathroom door opened. We have a 2 story home as well as a basement so the stairs leading up and down are gated off.

  • The basement is off limits unless we are with him and take him down there. It is closed off, but mostly because of the stair factor. Then we have two spare bedrooms and both stay closed- he's never really tried to get in to either.

  • I voted SS. No room is completely off-limits, but some are with supervision only. During the day we spend most of our time on the main floor. I keep the office and bathroom doors closed and have a baby gate blocking the entryway (the laundry is off of there and there are also stairs down to the door). If I'm in any of these rooms she is welcome to follow, but our house is too big to keep track of her if I don't limit the space a bit.

@flerlgirl‌ How's the new baby? Up for some MOTN nursing or feeding?
  • I don't know. There are not any rooms that she cannot go in but there are rooms that she does not go in because we just don't spend time in those spaces.

  • I kept the hall bath and master bedroom doors closed. The kitchen is gated off.
