August 2013 Moms

Discussion: We're pregnant vs I'm pregnant.

Mila Kunis was on Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday night and made a "public service announcement" that men should stop saying "we're pregnant".

I was curious what all the August 13 ladies thought and also if you remember how you felt about this while you were pregnant. Any funny stories/incidents?

Hmmmm...I think we just said "we're having a baby!" - but if my husband did or would say it, it would've been "she's pregnant" - I don't see him saying we.  And I don't think I would either...

Depends on the context for me. In general I took no issue with h saying "we're pregnant" when talking to other people about the fact we were expecting.
But if he had tried to pull the "we're pregnant" card in comparison to how I was feeling or what my body was going through I would have thrown my chocolate cake topped with pickles at his head.

    Eta: I don't think he said we're pregnant though...maybe we're expecting.
  • I agree that DH only said "we're expecting".

If he did say "we're pregnant" I probably wouldn't have gotten upset though. I made my pregnancy as much of a "team effort" as I could. I made sure he knew what was going on at all times, made sure he felt him move around as much as he could, he knew 100% of my plan. But I also can see where women would get upset. I had a very easy pregnancy and I can see if I was in pain a lot more or if I had gone into labor at home, I'd be throwing him out the window if he said "we're pregnant". I also assume that since my first pregnancy went pretty smooth, that my second will be the one from hell so my outlook will most likely change. ;)

  • I often said "we are expecting" instead of I am pregnant. I would be okay with DH saying that we are pregnant. I felt DH supported me as much as he could while I was pregnant and deserves to have a part in the announcement of it.

DH can not birth our children, and sometimes I take it for granted the amazing emotional journey I got to experience while pregnant with DS.

  • I know it annoys a lot of women, but it really doesn't bother me. I just kinda saw it as DHs way to be involved. Though the only time be said it was when we announced to everyone, so maybe that's why I didn't care.

  • Definitely no saying "We're pregnant" for us. My husband actually hates it, he thinks it sounds ridiculous and I have to agree. I'm fine with "We're expecting" but it's just the woman that's pregnant, sorry men but you don't get to take credit for it LOL

  • It doesn't bother me and I don't recall if DH ever made that remark. I know our fb announcement said we're expecting. I wrote it though. Now, if he had made some bs remark in the labor room about how "we're in this together" I probably would have smacked him.

  • It has nothing to do with sympathy or appreciation of pregnancy symptoms.  Pregnancy is a physiological/medical condition that requires a uterus.  We were expecting, we were having a baby, but I was the only one pregnant.  "We're pregnant" is a pet peeve of mine.

  • I was on the "we're expecting" train, never the we're pregnant. I think that DH would have used that phrase to justify his pregnancy cravings.... not gonna happen DH! I will eat all the cake!

  • Meh. Not on my radar of things to be bothered with being annoyed over.

  • Not bothered by it.
I'm pregnant, we're expecting is what we said.
  • I don't really pay attention to those things.... Pretty sure it didn't come up but don't really care anywyas

all of this! I feel like I vs we really reflects the involvement of the dad in the pregnancy.

  • I didn't say "We're expecting" or "We're pregnant" and neither did DH. With our first we said, "We are having a baby." and with the 2nd we just kind of said, "Yep, she is still pregnant... forever... we think it is a pachyderm."

Neither phrase really bothers me for the reasons she said, but I do think a man saying, "We're pregnant," just sounds a little dorky.

  • I definitely prefer "we are expecting" or "we are having a baby" to "we are pregnant". I can see where people are coming from with "we are pregnant" but I wouldn't want my H to use that phrase. My pregnancy wasn't the smoothest or most comfortable experience. If he had said that while I was pg I probably would have let him have it.

That being said I am not going to lose sleep over anyone else using it. To each their own.
