Cloth Diapering

CDing a boy

A few days ago I tried doing some different folds on one of DD's dolls.  The one I liked best was the angel wing fold, but I know the jelly roll is recommended for NBs.  I was using GMD orange edge pfs and it seemed like they barely fit the doll after folding it!  But another problem I was thinking is, how to do you fold the diaper fast enough without the boy spraying you with pee?? I know I will get faster as I go, but seems like this could be a real problem in the beginning.

Re: CDing a boy

  • I didn't have a boy, but I always put a prefold underneath when A was a newborn to catch any pee before the diaper went on. For a boy, I'd probably just lay a prefold on top of him instead.

  • I used to just lay a cloth over him until I had the diaper ready to put on.

  • I read somewhere that it's a reflex for them to pee when a wet diaper is opened and they get exposed to air, so one thing you can do is open the diaper, then hold it closed again for a few moments in case they pee in response to you opening the diaper.

The second thing you can do is just lay a baby wipe or even another prefold over his crotch while you are wiping/applying cream/getting the new diaper ready.

I think there are gimmicky covers you can buy for them but I wouldn't bother. I haven't heard good things about them and it sounds like they are mostly a humorous baby shower gift.

... and this is one reason why CD are so great. If they pee on a diaper mid-change, you can just wash it. You don't have to throw a way a sposie that you barely had a chance to get onto them.
  • Yeah, we used a prefold on top most of the time.  Its gonna happen though. :)  Most of the time it happened, it went on DS...sometimes on his face.  The first time it happened, I freaked out, like the pee was going to hurt him or something.  Eh, you get over it and move on. :)

@Amores0121‌ You can get more width out of prefolds by doing reverse Angel wing fold. Basically you fold the extra length out instead of in. Here's a link:

  • I guess my son is an aberration but he's only ever peed a fountain twice, and both times I left him hanging for an extended period. It also doesn't take that long to put the prefold on.

Wow, I am so confused by this fold. LOL

Also with the jelly roll, it's like how does it stay rolled...it seemed like it didn't stay put very easily.

I always sort of re-rolled it once the snappi was on.  Just to tuck in the edges.  DH would roll it really tight before putting it under DS and that seemed to work pretty good.  But I could never hold a prefold one handed while lifting his butt.

  • DS was always squirmy so I never mastered the jelly roll. I always felt like I needed four hands -- one to hold him still or lift him up, and three to do the jelly roll. So, angel wing worked best for us. Once it was snappi'd if there was any slack around the legs we could roll those in, or tuck them inside the cover. Poo got contained just fine.

    Ditto
Yup. We gave up on the jellyroll pretty quickly, but it helped that we had way more covers than we needed so it didn't matter if we went through covers more often.

  • You just have to be quick. Logan peed on his face more than once. And down the wall. And all over his belly..... Hahahaha.

  • Extra prefold or wipe over him :) also remember that that phase doesn't last very long. I think G only did that for a month or two (?) before he stopped peeing at every change.

  • Thanks for all the advice! For the ppl who are saying put a pf under them...you mean, put an extra pf under the diaper pf? I assumed you laid the baby on the pf while you were folding it, right? That's how I practiced on the doll.

Yes, an extra one. We keep a prefold sitting on the changing pad under her bottom. Then if she pees, we only have to change that, not the whole changing pad cover.

  • Yeah, what TJ said. I'd like to point out, though that while that's handy, you're much more likely to get a little fountain from a boy, so (in my opinion) the wipe or prefold over him is more important than the one under him.
