New job not what I expected :(

I had posted a few weeks ago about taking a new position-

While this job was slightly less money, the benefits were great and the office is in walking distance of my house. That being said, the main concern that I had was would they be flexible with my hours as I need that for my kids. In the final interview and again on the phone before I accepted the position, they assured me they would. I even clarified that I would ideally like to work 32-36 hours per week and they told me that the structure for these hours are in place and it would be possible for me. Flash forward to my first week- I was scheduled right off the bat to work until 6 two nights a week. The vibe that I am getting from the office is that there is no flexibility in hours- It is a 40 hour a week 8-5 or 9-6 job with no exceptions. When I brought this up with the manager that hired me, he said "ok- we will not need you here until 6 two nights, only one" and I am able to work through my lunch on Fridays and leave at 4. I guess this is just not the flexibility that I expected and now I feel stupid that I didn't actually get a written guarantee on the hours- it was all verbal agreements.

Any suggestions on what I should do? I am not in a position to just quit and I am not sure how to bring it up again. I do have a review in 30 days so I could bring it up then. The upside is that the job is something that I enjoy, it's close to home and the people are very nice. I guess that I just feel disappointed and I'm wondering what I should do.

How big of a problem are the hours?  If it is just annoying and not what you expected, I'd wait until you've been there a while and established yourself before bringing it up again.  But if it is a real hardship for child care reasons, etc. I think you need to have a conversation with your manager and be very specific about what it is you need and whether or not an accommodation can be made.

  • I'm so sorry they gave you the wrong impression.  I hate trying to determine if a new job will be a good fit.  You just don't know until you get into it.

Are you hourly or salary?  I guess it wouldn't make much difference, but if you're salary, maybe they are paying you 40 hours a week and so expect 40 hours a week?

I would definitely bring this up in 30 days, particularly with the person that told you this when you interviewed.  If it doesn't change, I would begin looking again.  We're pretty early people, so 6pm would be a definite deal breaker for me.
