bottle feeding questions

Sorry if this has been asked before I couldn't find anything on search. So I'm going back to work and trying to figure out LO's eating schedule (EBF). What I've figured out so far is she takes about 2 oz/hr and naps or plays between. I know you can offer the same bottle an hour after its heated but would it be better to give her two separate bottles of 2 oz each?
Ex: wakes at 930-takes 1.5-2.5 oz, playtime until 1015/1030, takes remainder of 4 oz bottle (1.5-2.5 oz), rock/soothe for about 15, takes about an hour nap, repeat.

Also, when getting her bottle warmed how long can it sit warm/room temp before she eats it? Sometimes I think she's waking up (video monitor) and get it ready and she goes back to sleep.

Re: bottle feeding questions

  • Are you giving breast milk or formula?

Breast milk is much more stable than formula.  It can sit out for several hours before you need to worry about it.  Leftover BM in the bottle can be re-used at the next feed.

Formula has to be used within 1 or 2 hours from when you mix it, unless you are directly refrigerating it - then it's good for 24 hours in the 'fridge.  Once LO begins a feed, that bottle should be discarded after 1 hour (that's according to the manufacturer, I think it's fine for 90 minutes).

These are the guidelines we follow, and have had no problems.  If she is eating every hour, BM or FF, I would think you could use the same 4oz bottle between the two feedings.  HTH!

  • It's BM-sorry I guess I didn't really make that clear. Thanks!
  • My understanding is that once BM is warmed up you have an hour to use it. If it is fresh you have up to 6 hours. So if you pump in the morning, that BM could be used for a while, but if you are warming it, you have only an hour. So I would make 2 smaller bottles, just in case.

These are the guidelines the hospital gave us for a full term baby, for preemies they suggested tighter "rules".

    hope it helps, good luck!

  • Thanks. @babycaps, can you rewarm for the next feed? What's your opinion-if she's regularly not finishing the full amount split it up into two bottles or no?
  • thanks @babycaps

I get confused because those guidelines came from my NICU as well, although their regulations for premature babies is slightly more strict. So is it possible that standards are different at different hospitals? I think the ones I go by are a little cautious... I have never had milk go bad on me...and I have pushed my 6 hour rule a bit. Good to know I have other options.
