How does your baby go to sleep?

My LO (4 weeks today, yes have to update signature to add him) will only go to sleep if nursing or if he's in the car/stroller moving. I want to have him self-soothe to sleep without needing any help. Is it too early for that? Anybody have any tricks or tips for putting a baby down drowsy but not totally asleep so h e learns?

  • It supposedly doesn't happen til about 6-8 weeks that you can put them down and they will go to sleep. That being said, some children do it from the beginning or before that. Don't get discouraged yet, it will happen soon! At least I'm hoping for it!

DS will fall asleep in my Ergo, and that's the only way during the daytime and strangely enough, if I turn on the white noise and ignore him in a way (no talking, shhhing, bouncing etc.) -  just hold him close and wait. Night-time he is fine and falls asleep nursing. But I guess at night I don't speak to him anyway (keep quiet so he learns night vs day), so he's probably used to that.

We have the best luck putting him in the swing. The motion and vibration usually soothe him in a few minutes. Once in awhile he'll go down in his crib or PNP without fussing. The noise maker helps too.

  • Mostly being rocked, back patted, or in car. Sometimes I can put him in rock n play sleeper and rock and if he has paci it will work. I will wait a little longer before I try to stop holding him to sleep. My daughter was rocked to sleep for months and broke herself of it then fell asleep with bottle. Which I won't do that this time
  • She falls asleep during her last night bottle while burping her. She's 6 wks old. During the day or middle of the night feedings all I have to do is put her down while she's half asleep. During the day she'll fuss a little but she ends up always going to sleep and during the middle of the night by the time I get back into bed I don't hear any sounds.

  • I think this just depends on the kid. My first son only nursed to sleep for months. We had to sleep train to get him to go down by himself, around 7 or 8 months. This one puts himself to sleep in the RNP and has since he was born.

My son will only fall asleep while nursing or being held. I keep reading 6 weeks they can self soothe. I'm hoping that's the case.
  • My son usually falls sleep during burping.. Which is why I don't think we don't get good burps from him. However during the day I can't put him down half asleep because he'll wake up, but at night time I usually put him down half a sleep and he may stir for a few mins and then he goes right to sleep. I'm hoping it stays like this and eventually he'll learn to fall asleep by himself. To put him to sleep I usually rock and pat his back. Oh and LO is 4wks today.
  • I put my DD in her crib with her soother while drowsy then I let her cry/fuss for 5 mins and if she's still crying I put her soother back in her mouth and she usually falls asleep.

Either boob (sometimes after a meal, sometimes as a "pacifier" comfort sucking) or with us standing holding her close via our arms or a carrier and bouncing/walking/shushing. She needs assistance falling asleep. She has never soothed herself to sleep by being laid down drowsy, being rocked, or in a stroller. She has fallen asleep in the car seat a few times but usually just screams in the car.

  • Frequently he falls asleep while nursing or burping, but if not he will go to sleep on my chest. I have to wait until he is really out to put him down or he will wake back up. Sometimes eh will fall asleep in the swing if he is really tired, and usually he falls asleep on car rides. At night it usually takes me an hour to get him back to sleep, either with me rubbing his back while he is on my chest or with me rocking him. Luckily he gives me a long stretch because usually when I finally get him back to sleep it is up in another hour to eat again in the early morning! Nice to know people have had more luck when they are a little older, he is 4 weeks 1 day.
  • Brooke is 5.5 weeks. Bath at 7. Nurse until 730ish (she falls asleep here) burp, swaddle ( awake now but groggy) and into rnp half asleep. Sleep is until 330 change feed burp sleep until 730. We are scared to change anything by a minute!
  • DS has been getting better with putting himself to sleep. He started improving at the 5 week mark (about 5 days ago). I didn't have to do much to encourage it - almost like a switch went off. Just give it time and keep trying to put him down while he is drowsy. Eventually he will understand that it's night time and cooperate.
