Babies on the Brain

Newly Pregnant

Hello, I just found out that I am Pregnant. I have yet to go to the doctors, but am wondering what Books, Blogs, Information helped you with your journey? I have been doing some research, but not sure if I may have missed anything.

Thanks for your insight.

Re: Newly Pregnant

  • Congrats!! I have never been pregnant but my older siblings have been and both highly recommend What to Expect when Youre expecting!

  • When I was PG I read What to Expect... cover to cover, many times!  Every night I would sit on the couch w/ my book in one hand, a snack in the other & watch DVR'd episodes of A Baby Story (my husband thought I was nuts!)

A friend let me borrow Your Pregnancy Week by Week.  It was good, but very dry & clinical.

Also, on the lighter side: The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy and Sippy Cups are Not for Chardonnay were both great!  I enjoyed them, they gave some cute advice & were pretty funny.

    Congrats and Good luck!

  • The first tri girls may have some better info as not everyone on here has had a child.

    Congrats, though!

I've never been pregnant, but I'm a huge fan of Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. Even if you're not planning on a natural birth, it can help calm any nerves and make you feel more confident in your body's abilities.

I feel this book is outdated. There are way too many fear inducing areas too. I personally would not recommend this book.

  • Thanks All, Ill post this on first Tri too. ;)
  • I'll second the recommendation of Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy. It has lots of medical information, which calmed my mind with my first pregnancy and this one (silly signature won't update).

  • I found myself checking here and BabyCenter more than any books (though I had several.  I preferred Mayo over What to Expect.)  Research your preferred birth method (Bradley for me), and check out a few books on that.  Really, though, my midwife was (and still is) my best resource.

  • I also liked Ina May's Guide to Childbirth a lot, and Your Best Birth was a nice overview of various birth options. For basic pregnancy advice, Babycenter has a bunch of articles.

The best thing I did to prepare for birth, though, was to take a childbirth class that went over everything you could ever want to know about birth (all kinds, in all settings, with and without medication, etc), breastfeeding, newborn care, etc.

If it's in your budget, a birth doula is also an excellent resource. Mine had experience with all different kinds of births and birthing venues. We had appointments prior to birth to talk about our hopes for our birth experience and articulate them, practice positions and coping techniques for labor, go over any concerns we had and how we might best handle them. I had an unscheduled induction so our doula met us at the hospital and was with us until my son was born and we were settling in. Then we had a postpartum appointment to talk about how things were going with our new baby.
