Hemp inserts & Leaks

I'm pretty sure I have a heavy wetter on my hands. Once everyday Robert will leak onto his clothes. It's usually at the leg openings and I think his clothes are wicking the pee through because the fit is quite snug (BG 4.0).

I've done the newborn insert plus the longer/thicker insert at the same time and when I change him
(2.5 to 3hrs later) they're completely saturated.

I guess this means I need to add something like a hemp insert?? Suggestions?? They seem so expensive!

Re: Hemp inserts & Leaks

  • Hmm I heard hemp was better but maybe I'm getting confused and switching materials in my brain. I'll look into bamboo too!

I really like both my hemp and bamboo. Both are super absorbent. Hope this solves your problem!

I'm planning on buying some thirsties hemp inserts.  They are $9 for 2.

  • I prefer bamboo over hemp, but both are great. Wool is also great at absorbing a ton. I hate microfiber, personally.

Sometimes if the rise is off on the diapers then you will have more leaking. If you can post a picture I can help you trouble shoot.

  • I don't have hemp but use bamboo, microfiber, and prefolds for stuffing. Kinley isn't a heavy wetter- we're just now changing from newborn inserts to the OS. But she pees a lot at night. Best combo I've found is bamboo insert wrapped in a prefold. A bit bulky but it holds soooo much pee.

I do believe bamboo absorbs more slowly so if your LO pees a lot at once, double up with something faster absorbing. (Correct me if I'm wrong on this!)

I really like my bamboo bc they're much thinner and can be put right next to DD's skin, just under a cover.

  • I made my own microfiber cotton blend ones from car wash towels in the auto dept at walmart. Haven't had a leak yet but I use prefolds and trifold it around the doubler. I got all Martha Stewart about solving our heavy wetter problems :)

Yep, cotton absorbs faster than bamboo -- which is why folding a prefolds around it works well!

One more thing, you might want to look into fitteds with a cover for nighttime. You can add a hemp or bamboo doubler if needed. We had nighttime leaks with DS because he was a belly sleeper and it would leak out the top of a pocket diaper. Once we switched to fitteds with a doubler we had no issues.
  • Am I interpreting this correctly that you use two microfiber inserts in your 4.0s? Could it be compression leaks? I hear that's common if you double up MF. Hemp absorbs slower so if your kid soaks through MF you could add a hemp doubler to pick up excess.

  • Oh and we have a heavy nighttime wetter and our solution is a sbish fitted with the large insert folded in half with the smaller on top. I add a fleece liner to wick away moisture then snappi it with a flip cover. No leaks!
