My glass pan exploded-tell me what I did wrong

We were eating a casserole (this one, which was good: https://damndelicious.net/2014/03/05/broccoli-quinoa-casserole/) when the Pyrex in the middle of the table exploded all over dh and dd and DS and the dog and me. It got everywhere. Down the hall, halfway up the stores, in the kid's seats, on DD's hair and clothes and the stuffed animal she was chewing on, in the sink across the room... This thing fucking exploded.

We're all okay, but how did this happen? The Pyrex was in the oven for ten minutes at 350 and then put directly on a hot pad on the table. Nothing cold touched it. We didn't bump or drop it. It just out of the blue exploded.

I had a glass pan do this before but that was a knock off pan in a developing country so it was pretty poorly made.

I've heard of that happening due to thermal shock, but doesn't sound like what happened here. That's so weird! Was it in the fridge before?

It's cool today, and the pan was in the cupboard. The ingredients were cool/room temp when I put them in and then into the oven (I'd cooked earlier). Could that have been it?

  • That's scary that it just exploded while sitting on the table.  Glad everyone is ok, but what a mess to have to clean up.  I've known a couple of people who had pyrex explode in their ovens.  It isn't supposed to, but it isn't unheard of.

Maybe you can call them and get a replacement?  Though I'd be scared to ever cook in it again!

I had a friend who microwaved something in a Pyrex bowl and when she took it out, it exploded. She got burns on her arms.

  • That happened to me when I was pregnant with DD. I have no idea how or why..

  • My H (a chef) thinks it's because of a "stress fracture." Basically, it's a tiny little crack in the dish that you probably couldn't see, that caused the dish to randomly implode on itself. Usually happens either in the oven or right after it's taken out (any time there's a temperature difference.)

He also says putting cold food into a hot oven will increase the chances of it happening. But usually with stress fractures, it's just a matter of time.

I'm so sorry that happened, how scary!

Yeah, I think I'm going back to metal pans.

It was in my baby's HAIR.

  • I had a friend post that this happened to her recently.  I think it might have been Pyrex too.  When she posted it someone else posted that this happened to them once and they googled it and it is fairly common :(  So scary though, glad no one was injured.
  • I'm so glad no one got hurt!

This is exactly what my DH said (scientist).

    Glad you're all ok!

  • Scary! This exact thing happened to me with a strata on Christmas morning in a Pyrex. I have been using a ceramic casserole dish ever since with no issues.

  • Holy shit....how scary! I have no experience with that, but I'm so glad you're all ok! I dont blame you one bit for boycotting Pyrex after this!

  • That sound so scary!  But, unfortunately with tempered glass it's a problem.  With the constant heating and cooling cycles it slowly breaks the glass down.  What happens is, one tiny scratch or an air bubble in the glass from when it was made can cause stress within the glass.  As the temperature in the glass changes and it doesn't heat and cool at an even rate (because the properties of the glass have changed with every heating and cooling cycle) pressure builds up between the atoms and they explode.

    Call pyrex.

  • Fucking Pyrex. That was going to be my comment based on the title alone. Color me shocked that it actually was a Pyrex pan. I've exploded one in my life and a friend of mine had one explode in her hands.

  • So if this is just something that happens with time, why are they still sold?

Randomly exploding glass pans seems like a bad thing.

    I'm pissed.

What do I replace this shit with? I've been trying to stay away from nonstick.

Is stoneware going to blow up on me as well? It's so freaking heavy.

  • You know, I'm thinking when all of our financial woes blow over, I'm going to kill all the Pyrex and replace it. The paranoia is starting!

They're still sold because it generally has a long life cycle and there is a relatively low chance of it exploding, but it does happen it's a flaw in the material they chose.  Much cheaper to produce and much less polluting.  Replace it with either old pyrex-the opaque milkglass, stoneware or aluminum baking pans.
