Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding pump suggestions?

Hi, ladies! I am about 6 months pregnant and am planning on breastfeeding LO when he arrives. Most of my friends and family went the formula route, so I don't have many references to consult about what pumps personally worked best for people. I have been doing online research, but sometimes it helps to hear honest opinions from other moms who have been there.

I have read great things about the Medela Pump In Style, but are there any more affordable options that work just as well? I would love to hear what worked (or didn't work) for you. Thanks! :)

  • I would call your insurance company and find out what is covered first :-)
I definitely plan on it. Just trying to gather some opinions from others at this point! :)

Generally, Medela is the most recommended pump on here.  Not all insurance companies offer it -- or, if they offer it, they make it very hard to get (my LO was born last July.  At the time, insurance said i could get on a list for it after she was born.  They estimated a 5 month wait).

The next most recommended pump on this board seems to be the Ameda.  Most people don't love it as much as the medela, but more insurance companies offer and it tends to be cheaper.

Other than that, I think you might get more specific feedback if you post the names of the available pumps and ask people to give feedback.
That's probably a good plan. I had no idea the wait could be so long! I'll make sure to call tomorrow so I can see what my options are.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions. :)
  • I have the PISA and it was free with my insurance. In the hospital I used the Ameda. For whatever reason I liked that one more. It also had less parts to clean and is a closed system. I've had no issues with my PISA though.

  • I have the Ameda Purely Yours and it works great for me. I opted for it over the Medela after doing a lot of research for 2 main reasons. 1-it is a closed system so milk cannot enter the tubes or motor. 2-it was cheaper. My insurance is one of few that is not required to cover breast pumps under the Affordable Care Act so I had to pay for it completely out of pocket.
  • I rented the hospital grade Ameda at the beginning, then since it worked so well for me, bought the Ameda Purely Yours, and loved that one as well.

  • I have a hygeia q, which is the insurance version of the enjoye. I've been very happy with it so far LO is almost 12w abd I've been pumping once a day since she was a few weeks to build a freezer supply. It's a "hospital grade" personal pump. It's quick and efficient. I'd recommend it.

Okay, I called my insurance company and they fully cover the Evenflo Double Electric Pump. They will also cover $80 towards any other pump of my choice if I don't want that one. Does anyone have any experience with the Evenflo? It hasn't gotten the best reviews.
  • My insurance company had me buy the pump then send in the recipet for reinbursement. I chose the ADVENT double electric. I really like it, its light weight and easy to use and the flanges are cushioned which i find very comfortable.
