Block feeding help?

DS1 had MSPI so when DS2 started having excessive spit up the pedi had me cut dairy to see if that helped. It kinda seemed to but not really. As she talked to me more about what all was going on it sounded more likely we were dealing with oversupply and OALD. I was instructed to do block feeding. The first day went great. He barely spit up at all. Now it seems as though my left side is great but my right side has gotten worse. It's a fight to get him to eat from the right side as he chokes and gags on it. I've tried expressing a little before I feed him but I'm afraid of that signaling that it needs to make more on that side. He has also been having more green poops now which I have read indicates hind-milk/fore-milk imbalance. Thoughts? I have been block feeding since Monday.

Ugh, I'm sorry you're dealing with oversupply and OALD.  What a pain.... I had both pretty bad when LO was about 3 weeks and block feeding didn't work for us.  My problem side was also the right side (in fact, whenever I have issues, it's still that side!)  When I would let down, I would let the milk go into a washcloth until it slowed down a bit.  My LO was just too young to be able to handle how much was coming out.  I tried block feeding for a few days but that didn't take care of my supply problem.  I ended up pumping both sides until empty first thing in the morning.  I would then block feed the rest of the day.  I did this for 2 days and things were more or less solved by the end of day 2.  On day 3, I would just feed LO from 1 side and then switched to the other side for the next feed.  GL!

  • The lactation nurse wants me feeding 3 times on one side then switching. I've only ever done one side per feed. LO is 4 weeks today. @flc320‌ I might try that if it keeps feeling worse. When I went to talk to the pedi on Monday she had me pump just to see what I could get out. I stopped at 8 oz (6 from the right alone) and he only ate 1.5-2 oz when I went to feed it to him so I definitely make more than he needs or wants! @AmyG*‌ thanks for the advice. I wondered about maybe doing the 3 feeds on the left but only 2 on the right to see if it made it go down quicker. I just hand expressed in the shower and fed when I got out and he did a lot better.
