Baby's Head High at 36.5 Weeks

Just got back from midwives. Apparently the baby remains head down (has been since at least 28 weeks) but his head is "high." There isn't much to worry about at this point though the hope is that by 38 weeks his head will have engaged -- particularly since I am a FTM. My midwives suggested walking a lot, sitting on exercise ball, not slouching backwards while sitting. I am also going to my chiropractor who specializes in pregnancy for an adjustment on Monday and will share this with her. I know that many have had this issue and then everything was fine. But given that it increases your chance of going post-dates and c-section, I was just curious if anyone had any other proactive steps that I should be taking now to help baby engage and get his head down in my pelvis STAT. Appreciate any suggestions!

  • I think it's silly they are even thinking about head being engaged at 36 weeks. A lot if 1st time moms have no engagement until 1. After 40 weeks or until labor actually starts.

  • Well that's great to hear! I had actually heard that it was the opposite -- first time moms tend to engage earlier and if they don't its cause for concern (sometimes OBs even starting talking c-section as early as 38 weeks!) but that second (and beyond) moms often don't engage until labor starts. But perhaps I got the two mixed up. Either way, hoping nothing to worry about and that he engages as I progerss through the next few weeks (officially 37 weeks tomorrow).

  • Im 38 weeks and baby is head down and high.
  • I am 40 weeks and 4 days and as of Tuesday the baby was head down and lower than the week before but still high.. my midwife wasn't concerned though. The head will come down at some point. I try walking and moving a lot and I sit on my exercise ball. Not sure if those do much but it doesn't hurt! Hang in there, your body and the baby know what they need to do!

At my appointment at 36 weeks baby was high. Yesterday my doctor was floored by how much she has engaged in the last week. I've been rolling my hips in circles on an exercise ball for the last week while I work so that may have helped or she just decided to move down on her own, who knows. I wouldn't worry about it too much, lots of babies don't engage until labor.

  • Ok, thanks all. I will do all of the recommended and also just have faith that he will drop down when he is good and ready. I did speak to my midwives about why there was all of this discussion about c-sections when babies heads were high at 38 weeks, etc. They clarified that (a) don't rely upon crazy stuff you read on the internet but that (b) what is likely omitted from those situations is that it was probably a number of other factors -- perhaps baby's head was high and was measuring too large overall so that the OB made the call that the baby would not engage because they could not. There were any number of reasons why c-sections would be called for at 38 weeks but just like you all are saying, a head being high alone was pretty much meaningless in that determination for all the reasons you all mentioned -- that if that's the only issue there is still plenty of time for baby to engage AND oftentimes they don't even engage until literally while IN labor, and they see that all of the time with good outcomes. Info that would've been helpful when they told me baby's head was measuring high...but I guess better late than never! ;)

  • I'm a ftm and my son was high until I was induced at 41 weeks. It doesn't always happen until you're in labor. Everything went fine with us... so relax! You still have plenty of time.
