Gardening poll

edited June 2014 in October 2012 Moms
Brooke's green beans made me want to do a gardening poll! Do you garden of any sort? (container, raised bed, square foot, traditional) Anyone care to share pictures of something awesome, or how about a seed swap? Do you preserve?

Re: Gardening poll

  • I scaled back on my garden this year but it still keeps me busy. Tomatoes, peppers, onions, lettuce, sweet potatoes, green beans and cucumbers and a bunch of flowers. I wash, core and freeze tomatoes as they become ripe and stick them in the freezer. Then at the end of summer I have a canning party. Just boil and peel everything and can like you normally would. Doing small batches here and there would put me in the looney bin! I freeze peppers and it works great. I'll slice some for fajitas and dice some for meatloaf or chili. I'm most excited about my pumpkin patch this year! It's about a half acre of seed that I saved. I love to mix up all the seeds because you never know what you'll get.

  • I did SS. We don't have a garden yet but we want to next year when we focus on our back yard! We just moved in about 6 ish months ago. I don't know exactly what we will grow but probably mostly vegetables. I have heard that cantle pup is easy to grow but I don't think we will grow that as we don't eat it often.

I hope when we do grow one it doesn't just die. I should probably read up on it before we do one next year! I had a garden growing up but I haven't done one myself.
  • I said no garden, but I do have a green thumb.  We just don't have a yard big enough for a garden of any sort.

    Maybe our next house

  • @brookethecat your garden sounds amazing! I'm very jealous.

We don't have a garden, but I'm hoping next year to get our backyard in shape so we can have one, until then I will just have to head up to my mom's house and ask for some of her tomatoes!

  • We have a raised bed with green beans, cucumbers, and zucchini.  Also attempting to grow pumpkins this year.  We also have a bed of strawberry plants that grow like weeds and they are so yummy!  Speaking of surprises...we grew broccoli a few years ago and brought a head of it in the house covered in green worms!  They were so well camouflaged, we didn't start seeing them till we started pulling it apart. yummm

  • Holy cow! Your gardens sound so delicious! Mine isn't mulched yet so it looks kind of poopy, but I'll take a pic tomorrow.

@BrooketheCat, I just thought of something... would we be wanted felons if we shipped seeds over the border?? I think my grapes got confiscated when we visited CA a few years ago! Those guys ain't messin' around! :)

Do you all mean "vegetable garden" by "garden"?

We have a garden, but it's full of plants and flowers and trees (and chameleons). We're not good at vegetables. We have a couple of straggly herbs that we eat when we remember.

  • I should have added flower gardens too. I was thinking veggies mostly.

  • I do flower gardens only.  My husband is anti veggies and our house does not seem to support veggies.  I also struggle with the dogs peeing on the plants.

  • I don't garden, but my dad has a huge one that we like to help in. And steal the veggies. I should take a picture of their patio ( it's a container garden) it looks like a vegetable jungle.

Oohhh, I'd love to see this! Sounds beautiful :)

  • @BabyCarryingVessel‌ , it's not "beautiful" but hot damn, there are a lot of veggies. Usually by the end of summer, the cucumbers and tomatoes go over the roof. I'll take a pic next time I'm there.

I was a SS also.  I have a brown thumb, but Hubs has a garden and he's really good with that kind of thing.  This year he's growing tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli, watermelon, peppers... and we have an asparagus patch that's basically done for the year.

Me, I just stick with raising the chickens.
  • We have a fenced in approx. 10' x 20' in the back yard.  This year we have planted brussel sprouts, green beans, peas, tomatoes, potatoes and cucumbers.  We have a container with zucchini growing (one of DS's favorites).

I say we, but I mostly mean DH.  He has done most of the work the last 2 years.

    Isn't your H a farmer?
My family farms.  We both help out ALOT.  But - that is corn, soybeans, hay, and milking cows.  He will eat corn and carrots.  I'm not planting a garden for corn and carrots...I can steal those from family that planted too much :)

Everyones gardenlooks fab. Ummm i just got my yard together we ripped out old bushes trees and put in new sod last month.
Today a painter is coming to paint deck and then we are done
I replanted the hydrangea in a black urn like pot my mom and mil planted when we first bought the row house. I have boxwoods landscape front yard..all things that are LOW maintenance. A coworker gave me mint that i planted for tea. Yeah no green thumb here

  • I don't kill plants, but they just...won't grow for me.  I'm not sure what I do wrong.  I tried for a few years at my old house and then last year at our new house had some planters.  I had 2 tomato plants and a pepper plant and I only got one pepper and no tomatoes grew, the plants barely got bigger.
  • @awesomesauce123, maybe it just needed fertilizer?
