How does your LO sleep?

I'm thinking we're in the midst of the 4 month wakeful - and up til now DS has been swaddled fully. But now I'm thinking if we're not sleeping anyways should I just bite the bullet and unswaddle? What is everyone else doing around this time?

We're in a Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit. It's not a swaddle but muffles his motions so he's not whacking himself in the face at night.

Still swaddling, but we are looking to stop soon. Don't mean to hijack the thread, but has anyone used a zipadeezip?
  • I looked at those and they look amazing! I have two SwaddleMe wraps and a Miracle Swaddle (or something) but my problem is my DS is getting so big for them - he's probably pushing 18lbs - so he can get himself out of stuff. Which perhaps is a sign I need to stop swaddling, but if he frees himself he won't calm down and then I re-swaddle him and he's back out.

@BB0214‌ - my friend swears by it for her son. I might get one for my little monkey soon since she loves it so much.

We had successfully transitioned from fully swaddled to both arms out in the swaddle sack over the past couple of weeks. However, the past few days LO's arms have been waking her up. I don't want to regress, but I'm thinking of putting an arm back in tonight so we both can get some sleep! I'm not sure what happened to cause this change...early 4 month wakeful perhaps?  She's about 3.5 months old.

If LO doesn't get through this phase soon, I may get one of these since I go back to work next week and can't keep being up with a non-hungry, just-startled baby!

  • We're in between two options... as of last night, we're at "one arm out of the swaddle sleepsack." We've used the sleepsacks with the built in swaddles since the beginning since I had heard they were better for hip development, now we're just working on liberating her arms since she can roll.

  • we were very lucky and had an easy transition out of the swaddle. the RnP was a little harder but now we have LO in a Halo sleep blanket. her arms are completely out but it doesn't swaddle her legs at all so she can still kick around, just keeps her warm at night.

  • I voted Full Swaddle - because that's how he is when I put him down for the night...  Between 1-3a he manages to get one arm out and by the time he wakes (between 5-7a) he's got both arms out and sometimes even his feet.

He's starting to try to roll, so I think we're going to have to try something different soon, but sad because it's the only way he STTN so far :-(   (Tried a couple nights w/o swaddle and he woke both times around 1/2a)

  • Last night was our first night arms out. It wasn't great, but it also wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

  • LO has been "roaming free" since birth. She absolutely hated to be swaddled! DS loved it and I had to gradually "wean" him from the swaddle starting at 4 months.

  • We transitioned into a sleep sack at bedtime with minimal issues awhile ago. I'm currently trying to transition out swaddle sacks for naps because she wiggles her arms out and covers her face with the sack...scary. It's going horribly. She will not sleep for more than 15min, tried one arm too. The zipadeezip looks promising. Anyone else tried it?
  • I selected "Free to Roam"--but we use a Halo Sleep Sack (straight-up Sleep Sack, no swaddle). It gives her enough restriction to feel comfortable, it seems, because the one night we tried to go without it, she couldn't fall asleep.

It was a tough transition out of the swaddle, but I'm so glad we did it before she started rolling so that we weren't dealing with rolling and 4 month wakeful and unswaddling all at once!
Be very, very glad you did it this way. We had to quit cold turkey because rolling and hit the 4 month wakeful all at once. Shudder.

  • Also, dumb question: when you start to transition to arms out swaddle, and you have one arm out, do you leave the same arm out every night, or do you alternate which arm is out? Maybe I'm overthinking this!

We did same one out every night, but I'm not 100% sure that's on purpose.

  • I did it - I did the one arm out last night. He was up about an hour after I put him down and had to reswaddle the second arm and then give him his paci for a few minutes. I was up a few times other than him eating doing this but probably not much more than being up during this wakeful time. Hoping it works for naps today!

  • We use the miracle blanket which doesn't have any Velcro, it just works with the weight of the baby. Problem is now he's moving around so much it's coming very loose. It's the only swaddle that will keep his arms in since they are pinned down separate.

But I'm worried it's going to get so loose that it will cover his face. He's only 3.5 mo and shows no sign of rolling. I'm not ready to lose the swaddle yet!! :((

We're at the legs-only swaddle stage...getting to this point was NBD, but for some reason, losing it completely hasn't worked out yet.  He won't stay asleep without legs wrapped...maybe I'll try again tonight...

  • LO never liked being swaddled so we just put him in pajamas.
