yard sale season is upon us!

Im a first time mom and excited for some upcoming yard sales. I know a specific one that im going to saturday that is selling fall baby girl things so it should be perfect for my baby girl coming october. Any one have any tips and advice for yard sale shopping? I havent done much but im pretty cheap when it comes to clothes that will be worn for only a few months so I should be fine. We will only be looking for smaller items, mostly clothes and toys. Im so excited to start buying things for little one!

  • I had a lot of success purchasing clothing at yard sales. If the sale has quite a bit of clothing and you're there towards the end of the sale (not the first hour of the first day) you may have luck working out a pricing deal on a lot of clothes vs. piece by piece. for instance, I would ask if I could pay a flat rate for a grocery bag full of clothing. they got rid of a lot of pieces and I usually ended up paying about 25% less than if I had purchased piece by piece. Don't be afraid of clothes with stains if your child will be going to daycare. I stayed away from heavily stained items, but slightly stained items are perfect play clothes. I felt a lot better if I couldn't get a big stain that my child had caused out of something that I paid $.50 for!! Yard sales are also perfect places to build up your book collection, try out a piece that may otherwise be expensive (jumperoos, exersaucers, swings, bouncy seats, high chairs) and that you may only use for a short time! I would stay away from purchasing pacifiers, chew toys, etc. but only because I think those are one family use items!

  • Stock up for the year if you can... not just the tiny clothes. As you know, yard sales only come once a year.
  • I know you said that you are looking mostly for little things, but be careful when buying bouncers, swings, etc. second-hand. I was considering buying a swing second-hand until I quick did a Google search for it on my iPhone, only to find out it had been recalled for collapsing. :-O Just be smart about things like that, and you can end up getting some great deals.

I agree with @mrsweeber that it's awesome to find books at yard sales. They are so expensive new in the store, but I have built up a wonderful library for LO already and have spent almost nothing! Happy Shopping to you! :)
  • We found some clothing at a local yard sale, 5 items for a dollar! Some items still had tags!
