Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

17 mo dd cries hysterically and fighting naps now and still climbing out of crib.

It's day 2 and dd still fights her nap and constantly climbs out of her crib (started climbing out yesterday), I kept putting her back in without saying anything but she's hysterically crying so I stopped to hold and nurse her. I'm so lost, idk what to do anymore. Any thoughts/advice/tip?

My 15month old has had periods from time to time where for what ever reason she just can't settle.  She is usually a big sleeper and we have no issues.  During these periods we find it works best to stay in the room near the crib, we usually busy ourselves on the laptop or cell phone.  When she fusses we 'shhhhh' and she settles.  She pops up to check on us then lies back down.  Once asleep we leave.  It usually only lasts a night or two at a time.

We've done this for a long time though so it's what she's used to.  We try to do what works in the moment but doesn't completely set us off the rails long term (so keeping her in the crib with us nearby)

  • When my DS was 14 months, he started screaming in his crib and climbed out. We moved him to a twin bed and he went right back to sleeping well. I think he was just done with his crib, he loves his bed.
  • I'd probably just keep putting her down, even if she was crying, possibly giving verbal assurances that I loved her but it was time for sleep. I'd leave the room each time, count to 15-20 and go in again. If she started to slow down on the crying, pausing at all, even for just a few seconds intermittently, I'd give her more alone time to see if she would settle. This approach is what gets my LO on track these days when he regresses. (My DS hasn't really seemed truly distressed - he gets upset, but it doesn't sound like he's panicking, you know? If he sounded frantic, I might try picking him up and holding him for a short time or something else.)

I agree with PP, you might want to consider a toddler bed. If she can climb out of the crib, I don't see that it's doing any good and she could hurt herself climbing out.
